GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the supervision of the principal: the dean of students coordinates and administers all non-credit, non-athletic student activities in accordance with the school philosophy and diocesan policies; coordinates and administers the attendance policies and procedures; attends to all student disciplinary affairs; monitors student detention program; contacts parents in matters of disciplinary action; intervenes in or arbitrates student conflicts on campus; makes referrals to the counseling department; keeps accurate records of all disciplinary measures; oversees the school’s safety and crisis plans; assists with the overall supervision of the campus; performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.
- DUTIES OF THE JOB:
- Strives to achieve the goals of Catholic education; shows evidence of knowledge of the Catholic philosophy of education; promotes gospel values and Catholic moral teaching; upholds the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church; provides opportunities for the students to be prepared for life in today’s Church and society
- Coordinates and administers all non-credit, non-athletic student activities in accordance with the school philosophy and diocesan policies; supervises and directs the student council moderator, class moderators, and club moderators; approves fundraising and expenditures from the activities budget.
- Oversees an annual review of the student handbook in collaboration with the Academic Council and administrative team; prepares the student handbook for electronic and/or physical distribution; provides an annual staff and student orientation to the student handbook with specific emphasis on any changes.
- Coordinates and administers the school’s attendance policies and procedures; works with the receptionist and attendance secretary in checking students’ absences and tardies; maintains accurate records of all student attendance matters; intervenes with students and families on student attendance concerns; communicates with parents in matters of student attendance.
- Oversees the student field trip process; ensuring all related forms are up to date; establishing and maintaining a process for trip approval and oversight; provides administrative review and approval to field trips and all non-athletic student travel.
- Oversees procedures and processes to create and issue student ID cards; assign student lockers, assign student parking; and all other student-related logistical and safety measures.
- Attends to all student disciplinary affairs; enforces disciplinary action in accordance with the disciplinary policies of the school; prepares and presents student discipline matters for review with the school’s Academic Council; manages discipline at all student assemblies; contacts parents in matters of disciplinary actions; intervenes in or arbitrates student conflicts on campus; makes referrals to the counseling department when deemed appropriate; reviews students’ disciplinary records and determines when a student should be placed on disciplinary probation; monitors daily student detentions; generates detention lists; keeps accurate records of all disciplinary measures; assists with the overall supervision of the campus.
- Chairs the school’s Operations Team and leads the weekly “Ops” meeting; reviews and assists in administering all student special assemblies; coordinates student activities with the master calendar of the school.
- Supports the school’s service program curriculum and activities in conjunction with the school chaplain and campus minister.
- Supports the school’s Faith Family program. Works in conjunction with the student council moderators and campus minister to plan and execute a curriculum and promote student leadership and social-emotional growth through the Faith Family program.
- Oversees the school’s safety and crisis management plans; develops relationships with local safety and emergency response agencies; provides annual safety & crisis training to staff; coordinates monthly or quarterly safety drills; engages in training and professional development specific to school safety and crisis planning.
- Works with the principal and assistant principal on the development and execution of the school’s mission, vision, strategic plan.
- Pursues continued professional development; maintains development through reading, coursework, conference attendance, committee work, etc.
- Performs any other job-related tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Must be a practicing Catholic (BFOQ)
- Must have a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration or related field
- Must be certified by the Arizona State Department of Education as an administrator and meet applicable NCA requirements
- Must meet Ministry Formation Certification as required by Diocesan Policy
- Must be in good physical condition
- Must have initiative, creativity, and problem solving skills; judgment in handling different personalities and emerging situations; an ability to observe and actively listen in assessing students and program needs, proficiency in good communication skills with both children and adults; positive attitude in crisis situations; ability to work cooperatively with others as well as ability to delegate
- Must have knowledge and understanding of positive disciplinary techniques and child psychology.
