What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of the Center for Multicultural Life position at Bowdoin College?
The Assistant Director of the Center for Multicultural Life (CML) is a newly designed role intended to support the mission, vision, goals, and programming structure for the CML and Russwurm African American Center. The Assistant Director will play a critical role partnering with the Director to design and deliver robust and innovative programming, including all heritage month programming, that centers and supports multicultural life on campus. They will also serve as an additional advising resource for students, providing information, support, and referrals to campus and community resources as needed.
The Assistant Director position will be required to live on campus and, as such, will have several live-on duties, including management of the Russwurm African American Center, support for the ResLife team with monthly walk throughs of residential spaces; and participation in the Administrator On-Call rotation. They will bring expertise and enthusiasm in organizing and planning events; coaching students on club engagement and leadership; and being a resource for students of all backgrounds.
Education/Skills Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. The Assistant Director must be collaborative and well organized. The ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential. A demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment is critical. Strong interpersonal skills, presentation, and training skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing are necessary.
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
1-3 years experience in a similar role. A minimum of one year of experience working with students in an educational setting. Commitment to and deep understanding of the concerns of multicultural students in higher education, and a strong appreciation for the diverse needs of all members of the campus community are vital. Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Office tools required. Knowledge of Google tools, social media tools and database systems preferred.
The anticipated start dates for the candidate selected will be on or after July 1,2025.
Exempt: 40 hours/week, 11 months/year (0.92 FTE). Schedule will vary – typical hours Monday – Friday between 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with evening and weekend hours required. This exempt-level position requires the time commitment necessary to fulfill all of the job responsibilities. This is an on-site role, and candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick, Maine.
