Job Summary
Bowdoin College’s Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum is dedicated entirely to all things Arctic, particularly focusing on the explorations of Bowdoin graduates, Robert E. Peary (Class of 1877) and Donald B. MacMillan (Class of 1898). The museum houses a variety of exhibits that include artifacts from Arctic expeditions, historical documents, photographs, and Native Alaskan and Inuit materials. In addition, the museum offers insights into the scientific and environmental challenges of the region. The museum is a part of Bowdoin’s commitment to education and research in the Arctic and polar regions.
The Cultural Property Security Officer for the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum is responsible for public safety, property protection, and for maintaining order and securing conditions within the Museum and on the Museum grounds. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Opening and securing the Museum daily, including conducting walking patrols of the Museum galleries, administrative offices, and storage areas
- Protecting the collections and facilities, supervising visitors, and monitoring general activities in the Museum
- Providing assistance to visitors, patrons, and staff either in person, on the telephone, or through electronic mail, and ensuring good public relations between the College and local communities
- Becoming thoroughly familiar with all building systems (intrusion alarms, fire panels, HVAC) and the unique characteristics of the Museum building
- Diffusing situations with tactful and appropriate communication skills and explaining department and Museum procedures to the public as needed
- Taking necessary measures to prevent crime and safeguard the lives and property of all visitors and staff, as well as investigating incidents, crimes and complaints committed against the Museum while observing established regulations and policy
The hourly rate for this position is $18 per hour.
Education/Skills Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Some college/coursework preferred
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure in a calm manner when stressful circumstances occur.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to produce clear and concise reports, correspondences, and emails.
- Problem-solving: Ability to work with a wide variety of people in varying situations, identify issues, generate solutions and make sound decisions
- Detail-oriented: High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy of written incident reports, logs, and forms
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
- Previous experience working in a customer facing role
- CPR and AED certification or willing to obtain certification upon hire
Standard Work Days and Hours
- The Museum requires year-round, 7 days a week security coverage, and Security Officer shifts are scheduled between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
- This is a casual, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working between 12 – 19 hours/week. It is an on-site role, and candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus in Brunswick, Maine.
- Although this position is intended to be flexible, maintaining regularly scheduled hours/week, the officer can be assigned to other shifts due to operational needs, including weekend hours and black out days. Also, additional hours may be required for shift coverage, especially during significant College events (e.g. Commencement, Reunion, Exhibit Openings and Special Functions).
