Job Summary: The Continuous improvement engineer Intern will support the production team on everyday tasks that support floor, with an emphasis on improving the plant performance, identifying the gaps and collaborate with maintenance, engineering and quality to resolve them. The intern will get hands-on production experience by assisting and/or leading improvements projects – which include improvements to existing processes and formats and cost reduction on the company’s products. The intern will learn about the mechanics of production line machinery and general production processes by being a resource on the plant floor for operations and maintenance and by leading continuous improvement efforts. The intern will meet with experienced company employees from our Mount Jackson location and Andros employees from around the world to learn about the various aspects of the company. The intern will improve their communication, leadership, and networking skills through these meetings, as well as working with external vendors and contractors.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Analyzes process data, identify the gaps, makes suggestions for improvement, tests and implements the necessary improvements, including hands-on troubleshooting.
- Optimizes the operation of manufacturing processes by finding the optimum processing, packaging, and machine settings.
- Focuses on continuous improvement opportunities within the plant.
- Participates in the Root Cause Analysis of quality problems to determine cause and solutions, coordinates with the maintenance and production departments to implement solutions.
- Work with stakeholders to improve safety, quality, and efficiency of operations.
- Develop documentation such as SOP’s, OPL’s, and Maintenance Programs for existing and incoming equipment and processes.
- Creates Project Plans and coordinates resources to ensure the project scope, schedule, and budget are met.
- Provides daily technical support to the plant leadership.
- Work to understand the mechanics of the production line machines in order to design and optimize new and current packaging formats as well as line efficiency.
- All other duties, as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Hands-on individual who can follow written/verbal instructions and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Regular and reliable attendance required.
- Self-driven, curious and possessing a sense of urgency to immerse themselves in the process.
- Strong problem solver with critical thinking abilities.
- Ability to react quickly to changing requirements and new process developments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. (For example, ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures. Must have ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from customers, managers and teammates.)
- Excellent analytical and reasoning skills.
- Excellent computer skills (proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook is a must).
- Ability to handle the pressure of dealing with priorities that change frequently.
Working Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a teammate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The Continuous Improvement Engineer is required to work both in an office environment and on the production floor. While performing the duties of this job, the teammate frequently will be exposed to outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat and/or cold. The teammate occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high precarious places and has to the risk of exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock. The incumbent will be exposed to loud noises from production equipment and thus will be required to wear PPE. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be high at times due to production and mechanical equipment noise.

While performing the duties of this job, the teammate is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle, or feel objects, equipment, or controls; reach with hands and arms; see, talk and /or hear. The teammate frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, sit, crouch, or crawl. The teammate will frequently travel up and down stairs and other uneven work surfaces. The teammate is occasionally required to taste, touch or smell.
Teammates must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull, and balance up to 75 pounds.
