Surgery Nursing Assistant-Unit Clerk

Position Summary : The Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk provides basic nursing care to non-acutely ill patients and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). Assists patients with changing for surgery before / after, safely helps transfer patients from carts to chairs and aids the RN / LPN in any assigned duty within their scope. Provides indirect patient care as a sitter for patients meeting criteria for this need. The Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk, under general supervision also performs a variety of general and specialized clerical support tasks related to departmental functions. The Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk aids staff to ensure patient information is collected and available in a timely manner. Greets patients and answers the telephone in a professional manner. Provides direct or indirect patient care.

All aspects of the Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk’s performance support service excellence and a healing environment. The Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk identifies and communicates needed unit resources or equipment to be included in budgets.

CLINICAL JUDGMENT / CARE DELIVERY

The Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk performs general and specialized clerical support tasks under general supervision.

Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk Accountability :

●Effectively communicates patient, family or staff concerns

●Implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and department of assignment

●Greets customers and answers telephone in a professional manner

●Completes required documentation

●Prioritizes needs and problems for actions

●Schedules surgical procedures

●Supports the implementation of clinical changes and evidence-based practices

●Prepares and compiles patient charts

●Ensures supplies are maintained and ready to be used for patient care

●Demonstrates professional conduct with accountability for actions

●Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

CARING PRACTICES / TEAMWORK

Caring practice and teamwork are nursing activities that create a compassionate, supportive and healing environment for patients and staff, with the aim of promoting comfort, healing, and preventing unnecessary suffering. These include, but are not limited to vigilance, engagement, and responsiveness of caregivers, including healthcare personnel. Teamwork is working with others (e.g., patients, families, healthcare providers) to promote / encourage each person’s contribution toward achievement of optimal / realistic patient / family goals. Both caring practices and teamwork include intra- and inter-disciplinary work with colleagues and community.

Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk Accountability :

●Assists co-workers to ensure total patient care has been provided

●Is receptive to being taught, coached and mentored

●Completes required documentation

●Participates in shift briefs, and huddles

●Consistently seeks and responds appropriately to opportunities for exceeding the expectations of our customers—patients, families, medical providers and co-workers

●Maintains proficiency in equipment operation and troubleshooting in area of primary assignment

●Utilizes Functional Pain Scale for ongoing assessment of pain

●Demonstrates cooperative, constructive complaint, problem solving techniques and offers suggestions for improvement using BBGH standardized tools and behaviors for conflict resolution

●Resolves issues to improve patient satisfaction and patient outcomes using service recovery as indicated

●Offers suggestions and actively participates in identifying department needs

●Maintains awareness of patient satisfaction score initiatives and takes active role with improvements

●Notifies RN / LPN in a timely manner with any significant changes in patient’s condition.

ENVIRONMENT OF CARE

It is the duty of the Nursing Assistant to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff by complying with all BBGH safety and infection control policies including but not limited to, BBGH workers’ compensation and drug-free workplace policies.

Nursing Assistant / Unit Clerk Accountability :

●Provides vital basic care needs to patients and families of BBGH

●Answers patient call lights promptly

●Completes occurrence report if patient falls, and notifies Charge Nurse

●Follows BBGH Infection Control policies and procedures

●Performs hand hygiene before and after any patient interaction

●Maintains Standard Precautions and additional precautions as indicated

● Holds all health care workers accountable to reduce potential falls, hospital-acquired wounds and infections, and follow BBGH protocols / policies

●Shares own knowledge with colleagues

●Participates in ongoing learning through education provided by staff, hospital-based programs / staff meetings

●Actively seeks opportunities to increase knowledge and skills

●Completes assigned education, mandatory training, and competencies per BBGH / unit-specific specifications in a timely manner

●Is aware of the happenings of the department by participating in daily huddles and reading emails

●Makes suggestions for unit-based competencies based on identified needs

●Receptive to new ideas and knowledge

● Attends a minimum of 80% of departmental meetings

EDUCATION

Required : High School Diploma or GED equivalent

Patient-Age Populations Served

Participates in care to patients throughout the lifespan.

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

License / Certifications :

Required : Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate for healthcare workers.

Maintains appropriate certifications
