    GENERAL PURPOSE

    Guards inmates in County Jail in accordance with established policies, regulations and statutes, while assuming responsibility for all needs of the inmates in custody.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED

    Works under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor.

     

    EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

    Performs the duties of a Corrections I and II.

    Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes; searches inmates and cells for contraband articles; guards and directs during work assignments; patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infraction of rules and unsatisfactory attitudes or adjustment of inmates, and reports observations to superior.

    Inspects locks, window bars, grills, doors and gates for tampering; employs weapons or force to maintain discipline and order among inmates, if necessary.

    Guards inmates in-transit between jail, courtroom, prison, or other points, traveling by automobile or public transportation as required.

    Locks inmate(s) in cell after searching for weapons, valuables or drugs, secures all valuables and/or drugs and follows standard procedures designated for the disposing or maintaining of the same.

    Orders and serves meals to inmates and provides or obtains medical aid if needed.

    Prepares arrest records including fingerprinting and mug shot photography (identifying the inmate and charge(s) against him/her); may question inmate to obtain information.

    Supervises inmate workers or inmates on work details inside and outside of jail, such as washroom and laundry, outside yard work, mowing, weeding and watering to maintain a clean and attractive environment

    Books in and processes all juveniles transported to the Jail. Responsible for monitoring while in Short Term Detention and the Box Elder Juvenile Detention Cell.

    Must have the ability to subdue unruly persons or prisoners with arrest control tactics.

    Must have the ability to get along with citizens and coworkers.

    Performs related duties as required.

     

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience:

    A.  Graduation from high school, or equivalent, AND

    B.  Graduation from Utah State POST with Special Function Certification and Basic Correctional Officer Certification is required.

    C.  Must be 21 years of age or older.

    D.  Must have good communication skills and working knowledge of the English language. Good ability to act/react with public.

    E.  Must have no criminal history or record of arrests, except minor traffic and no record of alcohol and drug use.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Some knowledge of the basic principles of psychology and sociology as they relate to detention of inmates; some knowledge of elementary first-aid techniques and procedures; considerable knowledge of the fundamentals of proper search and seizure; considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations related to jail activities.

    Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with inmates, the public and other departments; ability to observe situations, record them and react quickly and calmly; ability to deal effectively and courteously with fellow law officers and the public; ability to act with impartiality; ability to restrain physically violent inmates ability to react quickly to various situations under conditions of stress; ability to plan, organize and control the operations within the jail in order to maximize efficiency of jail activities.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk, talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, controls or tools; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; negotiate up and down stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.

    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. 

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception.

    Required to participate in the Physical Testing that is held twice a year. This testing will consist of either an obstacle course or standard testing utilizing Utah POST Exit Standards as the guideline.

     

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (Certificates, Licenses, etc.)

    Must be a graduate of Utah P.O.S.T. with Special Function and Basic Correctional Officer Certification.
    Certification is required to apply for this position.
    Must have valid Utah Drivers license.
    Must be able to perform essential functions of job.
    Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
