Position Overview
The Assistant Cafe Manager at Boxcar Coffee Roasters is a detail-oriented, organized, and proactive leader who is committed to delivering exceptional hospitality experiences for both staff and customers. This role requires an individual who leads by example, consistently upholds company standards, and fosters a positive, high-performance work environment. The Assistant Cafe Manager will work closely with the Cafe Manager to ensure the seamless operation of the café, including staff management, inventory control, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and service.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Support: Assist the Cafe Manager in overseeing daily cafe operations, ensuring smooth workflow and consistent service.
- Staff Hiring & Training: Participate in the recruitment process and help to onboard and train new employees to uphold Boxcar's values and operational standards.
- Staff Management: Lead by example, guiding and motivating staff to meet Boxcar’s standards for hospitality, customer service, hygiene and cleanliness.
- Staff Development: Provide real-time coaching, both positive and constructive, to ensure staff are continuously improving and meeting performance expectations.
- Quality Control: Ensure all cafe staff consistently meets Boxcar's quality standards for food, beverages, and service through regular monitoring and feedback.
- Customer Experience: Foster a welcoming and engaging environment for customers, ensuring Boxcar’s high standards of hospitality and service are upheld at all times.
- Inventory Management: Place and receive weekly orders, ensuring the cafe is properly-stocked and organized while maintaining accurate inventory records, as well as handling receipts and invoices.
- Team Culture: Help maintain a positive, energetic work atmosphere, ensuring the cafe remains a place of high morale and quality work through modeling of our company values.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to all company policies, including dress code, health and safety regulations, and operational guidelines.
- Management Collaboration: Attend weekly management meetings and provide updates to the Cafe Manager on staff performance, customer feedback, and cafe operations. Assist in the development and implementation of cafe systems.
What we are looking for in you:
- Barista experience 1-2 years preferred
- A love of coffee and passion for learning
- Valid driver's license and personal vehicle
- Available to work weekends and flexibility around the holidays
- A passion for hospitality and uplifting your community
- Ability to stay positive and focused under pressure
- Strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills (written & verbal)
- A detail-oriented approach, planning and time management are key
- Accountability and reliability, ability to model teamwork, ability to give and receive critical feedback
Physical Demands
- Stand and walk: must be able to stand for shifts and move about the cafe
- Perform repetitive motions: with the hands, wrists, and forearms to operate espresso machinery
- Taste/Smell: ability to detect and perceive the smell of coffee
- Talk/hear: frequently communicates with customers
- Carry weight, lift: lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
Compensation:
Average of 40 hours per week, with a work balance of approximately 70% scheduled bar shifts and 30% managerial duties.
