Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston Summer Camp Nurse: To implement and manage health services and related policies for the summer camp population at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston (BGCB). The nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, can provide training and education, possesses strong health assessment skills, and works well with people from diverse backgrounds.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Responsible for organizing, maintaining and reviewing camper/staff health records for health concerns, medications and immunizations/physical status.
  • Nurse will provide services for one or more summer with regular travel between assigned camps
  • Effectively communicates with BGCB nurse team and other colleagues, campers, parents, health care providers and BGCB management
  • Provide training and education to staff on common childhood health concerns in addition to allergy prevention and management, asthma management, seizure management, head injury prevention/concussion protocol review, diabetes care, specific camper health and social needs, staff health assessment of campers, accident prevention, first aid in the camp setting, universal precautions, lice and pest management and medication administration delegation to health care supervisor
  • Responsible for contacting parents/guardians when relevant to health issues
  • Develops and implements individualized health care plans for campers requiring medications and/or medical care while at summer camp
  • Responsible for informing camp director, camp health care supervisor and Director of Healthy Lifestyles of any specific camper health problems
  • Implements BGCB summer health and medication policy and procedures including the collection, documentation and obtaining the required paperwork for medication administration, storage, and administration of medications to campers and staff
  • Responsible for general and COVID-19 health screenings, administering first aid and emergency care
  • Strong understanding of allergic/anaphylactic reactions and able to effectively and independently manage related care, including:
  • Identifying the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and providing related nursing care and monitoring
  • Administering Epinephrine injections
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and detailed medical records including:
  • Staff and camper health forms, with special attention to immunization and physical screening compliance
  • Medical Log of daily “clinic” visits including injuries and all care provided
  • Medication Administration Records
  • Incident Report forms
  • Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases and ensure compliance with state school and childcare vaccination laws
  • Implement and comply with policies established by federal and state law in the area of health services
  • Review and implement emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel
  • Assist in maintaining the inventory of necessary medical supplies and equipment including the First Aid kits.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough medical logs, incident reports, and documentation of communication with families
  • Coordinate referrals to health care professionals as needed
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Nursing
  • Current unrestricted Massachusetts Nursing License
  • Current CRP/First Aid Certification
  • Firm understanding of HIPAA compliance
  • Experience as a school or summer camp nurse (or similar experience) preferred
  • Knowledge of professional and legal requirements
  • Ability to work with youth and families from a variety of backgrounds
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Techniques in health counseling/guidance
  • Ability to provide emergency care/assessment
  • Ability to convey medical information to the general public; in an easy to understand manner
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with community partners
  • Ability to lead or assist in the teaching of an activity to staff or campers
  • Physical ability to get to remote locations on camp property quickly
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control
  • Strong commitment to the goals, mission and philosophy of BGCB
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required
  • Basic computer skills including data entry and word-processing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment
  • Well organized, self-starter, assertive and able to build a healthy rapport with others
  • Start date of May 1st with negotiable hours until the end of the school year on June 20th
  • Must be able to work at least 25 hours/week (full time preferred), M-F, from June 16 through the last day of camp on August 15th. Full commitment to these dates and total weekly hours required.
