POSITION DESCRIPTION
The College Bound Academic Advisor position is a part-time position reporting to the College Bound Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast. The position will serve as a key staff member at the Main Club with responsibility of implementing the delivery of the College Bound program in the Teen Center and partnering schools.
The College Bound Academic Advisor will work in concert with the College Bound Director, Teen Mentor Professionals, and tutors to coordinate effective and consistent collaboration with students, parents, staff, volunteers and local high school counselors/personnel to ensure the quality of the College Bound program. This individual will help facilitate various group activities which meet the College Bound Program and site objectives of delivering high-quality college preparatory programming in a passionate and compelling manner.
The College Bound Academic Advisor will review and monitor student academic progress and tutoring and identify appropriate interventions when necessary. Success will be measured by the achievement level of students in the College Bound Program, by the number and quality of workshops implemented, the number of members in the program, and by the quality of collaboration with families, staff and local school personnel.


*Schedule: Shifts are typically 5 hours 5 days Monday-Friday a week at a time between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Typical shifts are 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM OR 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. SCHEDULES DEPENDENT ON HIGH SCHOOL NEEDS. WILL BE ASKED TO WORK AFTER HOURS OR SATURDAYS FOR SPECIAL EVENTS.

*MUST BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE AND PROVIDE AN OPEN/CONSISTENT SCHEDULE. MUST BE WILLING TO DRIVE. JOB REQUIRES TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN THE MAIN CLUB AND PARTNERING SCHOOLS. SOME DUTIES WILL BE CONDUCTED OFF-SITE.

Primary Interfaces: Chief Operating Officer, Teen Services Director, CEO, Board of Directors, Director of Development, Director of Finance, Community Partners and constituents

Hours per week : 20-25


KEY ROLES

Commitment to Safety
1. Contribute to environment of safety through the learning and implementation and monitoring of all safety-related best practices, policies, and procedures.

2. Promote accountability to safety through consistent observation, adherence to all safety rules and practices and proactive communication among members, parents, peers, and leadership.

3. Obtain and maintain Mandated Reporter training and complete annual Child Abuse Prevention training.

4. Complete training and participate in all Emergency Preparedness protocols including drills and communication practices.

Strategic Planning
1. Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the College Bound Program to youth within case load.

2. Communicate the goals of the comprehensive College Bound Program to members, parents and school officials.

3. Assist in developing a “4-year plan” with each student to track academic standing and progress towards high school graduation and A-G completion, which is required for college/university entrance.

4. Design the best structure possible to meet members’ year-end impact objectives. Develop systems to ensure constant member evaluation to be completed to review potential for impact, member motivation, parent participation and other important criteria.

5. Use reliable and frequent measures of student achievement including grades, progress reports, tutor feedback, test results, writing samples and appropriate interventions to track student academic progress.

6. Maintain and develop comprehensive records and reports.

7. Schedule regular meetings with members in order to assist in developing and meeting academic, career, and personal goals.

8. Provide career and career guidance and exploration activities for all members in the program.

Leadership

1. Schedule, supervise and support all College Bound students within assigned case load.

2. Regularly coordinate with site’s educational programs to ensure maximum member impact.

Partnership Development

1. Develop and maintain strong relationships with all families in the College Bound Program.

This responsibility will require contact with parents to inform them of member progress and program vision.

2. Work collaboratively with College Bound Director, tutors, and program assistants connected to the College Bound Program.

3. Seek out enrichment and academic opportunities for the students including programs, scholarships, extension classes, youth exchanges and community service opportunities.

4. Regularly communicate with local school counselors, teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to ensure that students are receiving the support they need to be academically successful.

5. When necessary, make appropriate referrals for members enrolled in the College Bound program. Follow-up on a referral at an appropriate time.

Outreach

1. Promote the College Bound program and recruit members by presenting to students, teachers, counselors, administrators and parents on the benefits of being members of the

BGCCOC and enrolling in the College Bound program. Coordinate recruitment efforts with the College Bound Director.

2. Contact and coordinate guest speakers to share information with members about careers and college experience.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provide assistance with the tutoring of high school members.

2. Assist in the coordination of special projects to increase college awareness among members including arranging guest speakers, college visits, workshops, and guidance units.

3. Assist in the recruitment and training of new Academic Advisors, tutors, and volunteers who will work with the College Bound Program.

4. Support important program activities like parent events, trainings and fundraisers.

5. Monitor, collect, and analyze important data for each member using the College Bound Program database.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree in School Counseling preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of three year’s work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or non-profit agency planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of children and teens. (Preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to community and members from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of California high school graduation requirements, A-G requirements and other college/vocational school entry requirements.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive data and information.
  • Ability to work independently and in an undefined environment.
  • Ability to motivate, organize and supervise youth in a safe environment and manage behavior problems.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Strong interest in education and impacting member learning in a positive manner.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Proficiency in office-based computer programs (Microsoft Excel, Word, and Publisher).
