Schedules: After School Program: Mon -Thurs - 3:15pm - 7:15pm & Friday's 12pm - 7pmSummer Positions are open from July 1st, 2025 Monday through Friday (Full-Time, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.), and part-time or seasonal.Founded in 1938, the Boys & Girls Club of Newark (BGCN) is a non-profit organization working with youth to help them achieve academic success, build good character and citizenship, and lead healthy lifestyles. An Aquatics Coordinator will work closely with the children.POSITION OVERVIEWThe Boys & Girls Club of Newark seeks vigilant, responsible, and safety-focused individuals to serve as lifeguards and positive role models for youth. Applicants must be 18 years old and committed to ensuring a secure and structured aquatic environment. Responsibilities include constant supervision of the pool area, enforcing safety rules, responding swiftly to emergencies with water rescues and First Aid, and ensuring all lifesaving equipment is adequately maintained and accessible.Lifeguards will mentor and supervise members and fellow staff, conduct routine safety inspections, monitor water quality, and assist with structured aquatic programming, including safe and supervised swim lessons. Additionally, lifeguards must maintain accurate records, consistently enforce policies, and report directly to the Aquatics Director, collaborating on risk management and safety strategies. This position requires highly alert, proactive, and committed individuals to upholding the highest safety standards in a youth-serving environment. - Minimum Experience of 1 year working as a Lifeguard.
- Strong swimming and lifesaving abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, supervisors, and other employees.
- Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques, including backboard rescue.
- Has a sound knowledge of good Lifeguard duties, monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work with youth and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Ensure a physically and emotionally safe environment for all youth , fostering a culture of safety, vigilance, trauma informed care and proactive risk prevention at the pool.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills to effectively engage with youth, staff, and patrons.
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas to proactively prevent accidents, unsafe behaviors, and potential hazards.
- Respond immediately to emergencies, executing water rescues, administering CPR, First Aid, and other life-saving interventions as needed.
- Educate and enforce all pool safety policies, cautioning swimmers about unsafe practices, dangerous behaviors, and potential risks to ensure strict adherence to safety regulations.
- Follow and execute emergency action plans and protocols in the event of a crisis, ensuring swift and effective incident response.
- Establish and maintain order in the pool and surrounding areas, fostering a structured and secure environment for youth and all patrons.
- Conduct routine facility inspections to identify and eliminate potential safety risks, while ensuring cleanliness and sanitation of all pool areas.
- Ensure all emergency and rescue equipment (rescue tubes, backboards, safety signage, etc.) is readily accessible, functional, and properly stored at all times.
- Perform and document regular water quality checks, monitoring chlorine and pH levels to maintain a safe and sanitary swimming environment.
- Provide clear and accurate information on pool operations, policies, and safety expectations to all patrons, emphasizing youth safety.
- Deliver structured and safe swimming lessons, ensuring proper supervision, skill progression, and adherence to safety standards.
- Complete all required reports and documentation promptly and accurately, including incident reports and maintenance logs.
- Other safety-related duties as assigned, ensuring a secure, inclusive, and positive aquatic experience for all youth.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- 1 1/2 years of working experience as a Certified Lifeguard
- 2 years of experience managing pool operations in a large facility serving 300 or more members
- Certified Lifeguard
- Water Swimming Instructor
- CPR Certified
- Certified Pool Operator
- Knowledge of pool equipment and maintenance
- Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of the public at pools.
- Knowledge of swimming pool sanitation and chlorination systems.
- Skilled in the application of lifesaving techniques.
