POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: BGC Youth Development Professional (Paraprofessional)
STATUS: Part time, hourly
DEPARTMENT: Teen Center & Shady Grove Unit
REPORTS TO: Site Coordinator, Site Director
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Promote positive youth development employing the five key elements of positive youth development. Implement program quality indicators within each youth session. Provide developmentally and linguistically appropriate instruction, recognizing children have individual rates of development as well as individual interests, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline. Ensure child safety and maintain a clean learning environment. Supervise children at all times. Implements and supervises activities provided within program areas such as Education, Prevention Programming, Social Programming, the ARTS, and Physical Education.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
- Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of Youth Development Outcomes:
o Promote and stimulate program participation;
o Register new members and participate in their club orientation process;
o Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
- Effectively implement and administer programs, services, and activities for members and visitors.
- Monitor and evaluate programs, services, and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs, and appearance of the organization at all times. Prepare periodic activity reports.
- Ensure productive work environment by participating in weekly site staff meetings.
- Attends and participates in all required meetings, activities, pre-service and in-service training that includes but is not limited to 15 hours of classroom focused professional development and methods that comply with applicable State and local laws for identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.
- Maintains and upholds confidentiality of children, parents and staff.
- Identifies and reports any suspected child abuse/neglect cases, notifying the Program Manager, who then notifies the Executive Director.
- Works as a team member with the other education staff.
- Prepare and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment for children that is positive, developmentally appropriate and experientially-based.
- Dress in clothing which is appropriate for outdoor activity and all weather conditions.
- Model and promote communication and problem-solving skills that assist in developing positive interactions, creating an atmosphere of acceptance, support and encouragement, which fosters the development of positive self-concept and self-esteem in children as well as attachment, bonding, and trusting relationships.
- Contributes to the collection process of correct documentation for the Child Care Food Program (CCFP).
- Is knowledgeable about CCFP requirements regarding portions and components of each meal service.
- Enters point of service meal counts in appropriate forms or software used by program to support claim reimbursement.
- Establish positive and productive relationships with families focusing on a relationship of trust and rapport with the parents of the children.
- Encourage the involvement of the families in the program and support the development of relationships between children and their families.
- May be required to drive a Club van.
- May participate in special programs and/or events.
- Assist teachers and supervisors in providing a smooth operation through performance of various duties as requested.
- Acquire and maintain up-to-date training/certification in CPR and First Aid.
- Attend workshops, conferences, training, and all in-service training. Participate in professional development activities. Maintain training hours and documentation as required.
- Show competency, good judgment, and self-control in working with children.
- Gain and use knowledge and awareness of all referral procedures.
- Reliably and skillfully use electronic devices, including but not limited to desktop computers, laptop computers, and tablet devices.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintains close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club
members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain guidelines/
instructions, instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintains contact with external community groups, schools, members' parents and others to assist in resolving problems.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree preferred)
- Must complete the Youth Development Professional Certification within one year of employment.
- Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems.
- Ability to organize and supervise members in a safe environment.
- Knowledge of youth development
- Valid State Driver’s License
- Interpersonal skills
- Ability to accept responsibility for assigned duties, ability to understand verbal/written instructions/reports
- Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational journals.
- Ability to speak before groups of individuals.
- Good attendance history in previous position
- DCF Level II Background Screening must be performed and eligible results received before employment begins. Must be re-screened at least once every five years and remain eligible to continue employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Maintain mental and physical alertness and an appropriate level of energy to perform essential job requirements.
- Duties to be performed indoors and outdoors with and around young children.
- Physically able to perform duties which may include, but not be limited to lifting (min. of 50 pounds), bending, moving with haste, etc.
- Due to the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment and annually thereafter, a fitness test will be conducted. If reasonably possible, results that do not meet the standards required for the position will result in accommodations or a change of position; if neither are judged to be reasonably possible by the Executive Director, termination of employment will occur.
- Travel by car, bus, airplane or train may also be required associated with attendance at conferences, meetings and other duties carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases where some overnight travel may be required.
- Noise level in work environment may be moderate to loud.
- Work is typically performed in a classroom or outdoor setting and some office work may be required.
- Some evenings and weekend work may occasionally be required for events such as home visits, parent-teacher conferences, Parent Committee meetings, community and social events.
