Holidays & Teacher's professional day : 10 : 00am - 2pm or 1 : 00pm - 5 : 00pm

PRIMARY FUNCTION :

Under general supervision of the Youth Arts Initiative Director, the Visual Arts Teacher is considered a professional, practicing teaching artist and is responsible for the development young artist at the club site. The Visual Art Teacher will collaborate with the Club program team to design and implement a rich visual arts program focused on pastel / chalk, drawing, acrylic / oil painting, etc. The Visual

Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering youth centric arts programming shaped with active, real- time influence and input of youth participants on program content and approach. Visual Arts Teacher must hold youth to high expectations, provide hands-on skill building with current, professional technology, engage key stakeholders and culminate with high-profile public events.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities) :

Provide Professional Arts Instruction to Club Youth

  • Establish and maintain, in collaboration with youth, an environment of physical and emotional safety based on respect at all levels. Provide hands-on, experiential learning through visual arts based on results of Club implemented youth surveys and focus groups.
  • Lead the semesters of art programming blocks throughout the year : one in the fall semester, one in the spring semester and one during the summer. Each program session should consist of skill development classes at least twice a week for two hours each class and at least one three-hour open studio time per week.
  • In collaboration with youth artists and supported by other Club staff, organize and implement at least three culminating events for programs throughout the year. Adhere to all requested program evaluation and documentation protocol detailed by Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida.

Develop and Deliver Relevant High-Quality Visual Arts Training

  • Provide youth participants with skills and guidance to find their own voices through the visual arts.
  • Design skill development and open studio classes for ALL skill levels (non-artists, beginner, intermediate and advance artists).
  • Include training in a variety of visual arts media, with specific focus on pastel / chalk, drawing, oil / acrylic painting, and as well as other media driven by the interests of the youth.
  • Lead skill development / open studio time, and time for peer-to-peer learning.
  • Expose youth to the visual arts.
  • Encourage youth to build their own portfolios, find their preferred medium and work independently within the group setting.
  • Ensure that quality arts entries are developed for the Annual Fine Arts Exhibit program.
  • Educate young artists on equipment and proper use of materials.
  • Serve as a Club Staff Team Member and Youth Mentor

  • Participate in all required and recommended Club trainings and staff meetings.
  • Serve as an adult mentor to all Club youth.
  • Serve as a champion for high-quality arts making and lead professional development workshops / trainings in the arts for other Club staff across the organization.
  • SKILLS AND TRAITS :

    Professional, Practicing Teaching Artist

  • Has earned markers of success in the field of visual arts (specifically pastel / chalk drawing and oil / acrylic painting) and exhibits artwork in public arts institutions.
  • Holds a relevant bachelor of fine arts or master of fine arts degrees in the arts, specifically visual arts or equivalent.
  • Has worked in a mentorship / teaching role with tweens and teens.

  • Assists in problem-solving while building problem-solving skills in others.

  • RELATIONSHIPS :

    Internal : Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), teen Club members, and supervisor to receive / provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines / instructions; instruct, and advise / counsel.

    External : Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member's parents and other to assist in resolving problems.

    ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Visual Art Teacher will have access to a fully dedicated studio space within the specific Club. Youth programming should be the primary focus of the Visual Arts Teacher; however, collaboration with the Club staff should take place to plan all additional programming, professional development and networking opportunities.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT :

    Physical requirements : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and policy manuals. Ability to write reports and correspondence. The ability to clearly and concisely exchange / receive ideas, facts and or technical information with others. Ability to visually monitor activities of club members. The employee is required to be able to perform CPR or first aid. The employee is required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, jump, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds. Working environment : Normal club environment.

    Visual : Normal acuity required daily for making color distinction, depth of sight, preparing / analyzing figures, computer use and written records

    Communication : Able to express thoughts and ideas in an accurate and understandable manner through verbal and written format with internal and external contacts (8 hours per day)

    Movement : Ability to maneuver within work site 6-8 hours per day

    Lifting / Pulling / Pushing / Carrying : Able to comfortably move and manipulate up to 30 lbs. of weight

    Travel : Required to travel by car to other Clubhouse locations
