DEPARTMENT / PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD or Clubs) CHANGES LIVES through quality programs and guidance in a safe, affordable and fun environment. BGCGSD’s mission is to inspire and enable youth to achieve academic success, build good character and responsible citizenship and make healthy lifestyle choices. We have been providing a safe, fun and positive environment at our sites with trained and dedicated professional staff. Members are involved in age-appropriate activities based upon our three priority outcomes of Academic Success, Character Development and Healthy Lifestyles.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Under direct supervision of the Vice President of Human Resources, the Safety Manager will be responsible for providing leadership and guidance in the areas of child and club safety for all staff, members, and volunteers. Provides training, resources, and consultations to all club sites; ensures compliance with established policies, procedures, and protocols; prepares reporting and analysis of all critical incidents. The Safety Manager will ensure all safety standards are met, and potential hazards are addressed on time and in compliance with BGCGSD and OSHA regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following :

1. ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Develop and promote capacity-building resources such as policies, procedures, checklists, newsletters and training materials for leadership, management, and youth development professionals.
  • Regularly review and update safety protocols to meet industry standards for youth-focused programs and BGCA requirements.
  • Review, analyze, and follow up on all incident / accident reports to identify root causes, corrective actions, system improvements, opportunities for prevention, and policy updates.
  • Ensure senior management is briefed on all incidents / accidents, with critical incidents being reported immediately.
  • Maintain a secure and confidential incident reporting database, ensuring timely communication with necessary stakeholders and BGCA.
  • Collaborate with staff across all departments to address identified risks, implement best practices, and ensure continuous improvement in youth safety protocols.
  • Serve as the main liaison for the Safety & Operations Committee, which includes scheduling meetings, creating packets, taking notes and coordinating follow-up actions.
  • Manage Board Member and Volunteer background checks.

2. COMPLIANCE

  • Implement and track Workplace Violence Prevention Program.
  • Ensures completion of required OSHA recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Maintain all safety logs and records.
  • Conduct drills and audits to ensure readiness for various scenarios, including natural disasters, medical emergencies, and security threats.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits.
  • Conduct surprise visits to ensure all volunteers on premises have been screened and approved.
  • Manage the processes for BGCA’s internal and external safety audits.
  • Track and report key safety performance indicators, providing regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Serve as the lead investigator for significant safety incidents, coordinating with legal, regulatory, and community partners as needed.
  • 3. RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Establish proactive risk management plans, focusing on incident prevention, safety standards, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish, oversee, and enforce clear protocols for documenting and reporting safety incidents, near-misses, and violations.
  • Provide direct technical assistance to club sites via on-site assessments, emails, telephone, and online consultations.
  • Identify potential risks and vulnerabilities at club sites and proactively support mitigation and safety improvement plans through online and face-to-face consultation and training.
  • Advise club sites on safety and security measures, including, but not limited to premise security, child supervision, vehicular safety, and internet safety.
  • 4. TRAINING

  • Plan, implement, and track safety-related training courses, including (but not limited to) annual All Staff Training, pre-summer Safety Training, CPR / First Aid certifications, and monthly mini-safety trainings.
  • Collaborate with Workers Compensation representatives on training and resources.
  • 5. GENERAL

  • Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse and incident reporting requirements.
  • Meet timelines and deadlines related to supporting systems and employee compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in operations, safety, risk management, or a related field is required. (Required)
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working directly in health and safety or an equivalent combination of experience and education in an organization that is at least comparable in size and complexity to BGCGSD.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software. (Required)
  • Excellent skills in monitoring, follow-up, and great attention to detail. Ability to collect, analyze data, and make decisions based on information.
  • Ability to be flexible and handle multiple tasks and projects at same time with a proven ability to meet deadlines; adjust priorities based on need. Experience responding to crisis or supporting crisis management.
  • Knowledge in one or more areas of safety, risk management and control, premises liability, security, property hazards, sports and aquatic safety, emergency response planning / procedures, crisis management, vehicular safety, bullying, and child abuse preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. (Required)
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate. (Required)
  • Ability to influence others to make needed changes without having authority to mandate change.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to provide effective training programs and safety related resources.
  • Demonstrated high standards of ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to think conceptually and develop innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrates passion for child safety issues.
  • Ability to work interdepartmentally to get results.
  • Ability to effectively use technology while traveling.
  • Special Conditions of Employment :

  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check and maintaining a drug-free work environment.
  • Occasional weekends and evenings in support of fundraising events, committee meetings, and activities.
  • Works at multiple locations throughout San Diego County and must be able to commute as needed.
  • C.P.R. & First Aid Certification.
  • Trained to certify people in CPR & First Aid a plus
  • Valid Driver’s license and verification of insurance.
