Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Site Coordinator and in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Boys & Girls Club of Lodi, the Academic Hour Instructor is responsible for the implementation of academic centered after school programs/ activities. The Academic Hour Instructor implements a wide-ranging program plan that helps nurture and harvest the academic potential of Club members. The individual will role model our core values of honesty, respect and responsibility and work daily to develop personal and meaningful relationships with members, volunteers, program participants and others.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Experience / knowledge in developing, and implementing, ELA/ Math programs that nurture the potential of youth.
2. Must be able to pass a background check. Consisting of two NJDCF required checks and two organizational checks.
3. Must be able to pass a drug/alcohol test at the employer’s request and comply with a “Drug Free” policy.
4. Must be able to provide a valid (acceptable) identification for the completion of the employment eligibility verification information in accordance with the I-9.
5. Flexible and able to adapt to changes in the work environment.
6. Have access to reliable transportation to commute, to and from work, to program locations, and for activities (such as meetings, classes, and workshops in and out of the immediate area.)
7. An understanding of the Club’s mission and values.
8. Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stressful situations.
9. Ability to understand and carry out varied instruction and procedures with minimal supervision.
10. Ability to communicate effectively and exhibit excellent relationship building skills with all levels of employees, management, and students (families).
11. Develop a lesson plan(s) that is (are) implemented for age appropriate groups of students. These plans must be centered on ELA or Math and will be utilized during the academic portion of the program
12. Attend all required staff meetings and trainings.
13. Complete 12 hours of training annually, as required by NJDCF.
Physical Demands:
Standing, walking, run/ jog (occasionally during program), leaning, bending, sitting. Must be able to lift 30lbs.
Key Roles (Essential Job Responsibilities):
The essential function or duties are provided for illustration only and may include other reasonable tasks as assigned for the good of the Club.
- Able to manage groups of students in the out of school time environment.
- Approach to work is one of that is supportive, nurturing, and inclusive for all.
- Arrive daily for scheduled workday on time and prepared for work shift. Staff must notify leadership if they will be absent at the latest, by 10am of the day.
- Must clock in, or complete time sheet daily upon arrive and at the end of the work shift.
- Does not use personal electronic devices during work shift (i.e. cellphone, earphones, etc.)
- Maintains a professional appearance and conducts business using a customer centered approach.
- Participate in staff meetings, surveys, questionnaires as needed by the program or organization.
- Assist senior staff as necessary to ensure successful outcome of the Club’s operations and mission.
- Contribute in implementing and carrying out programs and activities daily.
- Contribute to creating a positive Club environment that facilitates the achievement of youth

- Manage student conflict, problems and emergencies, analyze situations, comprehend problems and draw reliable conclusion taking appropriate action without waiting for direction.
- Acts as a role model by their actions in both their professional and private life.
13. As a role model, provide members guidance and mentoring to help them make appropriate choices regarding their educational, personal, physical, social, emotional, and career decisions.
14. Contributes to ensuring a healthy and safe environment for members.
15. Contributes to ensuring that facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained.
16. Maintain confidentiality of members, employees, and Club information.
17. Oversee proper record keeping and reporting including: Daily attendance incident reports, etc...
18. Reports any suspected abuse to the Program Director and Site Coordinator, to ensure that the proper steps in reporting and documentation are completed.
19. Adheres to all policies and procedures.
20. Contact school-day teachers to help with classwork curriculum.
21. Assume other duties as assigned.
Education / Certifications:
Must be NJ certified in either Math or ELA (grades 6th - 8th)
Must attain CPR/ First Aid and Child Abuse certifications within 90 days of hire.
Base hours:
Academic year is classified by the months between September through May.
Monday through Thursday between 3:20-5:45pm. Up to 2 hours per day for up to 6 hours per week. .
Professional Development:
As an employee of an NJDCF childcare licensed program you will be required to complete 12 hours of professional development annually. As a school day teacher, you already receive a majority of these trainings through the school district; however, you may be required to complete additional training that may be offered through online/distance learning sites or in person. Training may be outside your traditional work hours, which include mornings, nights, and weekends. Staff are expected to participate in all the scheduled trainings. Reasonable accommodations will be made for those that cannot attend training(s); however prior notification is required. Employees will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses related to attending professional development according to organization policy. Employees must provide documentation of the professional development hours to receive compensation.
Additionally, we may invite you to participate in non-mandatory professional development. These trainings are not required for your position hence your participation is optional. For the optional (non-mandatory) professional development that you complete you will be compensated at a rate of $20.00 per hour. Non- mandatory training must be pre-approved by the Program Director prior to participation.
Working conditions:
These tasks are to be performed at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, in Lodi NJ or Wallington Jr/Sr High School, in Wallington NJ. Occasional offsite trips and activities will be offered, requiring staff to work offsite. Academic Hour Instructor will regularly communicate with all program staff, students, school staff, and occasionally with parents.
