Description

Work Schedule:  Part-time – non-exempt.  Generally scheduled up to 30 hours per week, Mondays – Friday, between 11:00 am and 6:00pm. Occasional late evening and weekend responsibilities (i.e., training, youth workshops, art events).  


Reports to:   Elementary Education Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY: Working under the direction of their assigned Supervisor, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County (BGCMC) Arts, Impact Leader II plays an essential role in helping youth succeed as they directly serve as positive role models, mentors and activity leaders to diverse youth between the ages of 6 to 18 years old. Helping youth acquire the necessary developmental assets they need to achieve Academic Success, adopt a Healthy Lifestyle and cultivate their Good Character & Leadership. A successful BGCMC Arts, Impact Leader II will be able to encourage creativity and self-expression among youth and provide developmentally appropriate instruction.


PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work closely with the education team to coordinate programs in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Plan lessons in power period, arts, crafts, STEAM, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and other educational programs for youth K-5 and art classes for teens.
  • Prepare the classroom by gathering and setting up materials (e.g., graphite, acrylic, watercolor, paper, canvas, clay) and monitoring inventory and sourcing supplies as needed.
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, and art history 
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting   
  • Understand a variety of “masters” techniques   
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities  
  • Instruct youth in proper care and use of tools and equipment 
  • Ensure safety, order and cleanliness of the classroom.
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse 
  • Introduce a variety of art genres through guest speakers, specialized art instructors, field trips to art exhibits, plays, musical performances and special events.
  • Implement youth recognition into program planning.
  • Assist with Club-wide special events including BGCMC’s annual fine arts exhibit.
  • Provide youth a safe, positive environment – both physically and emotionally including assuming responsibility as a mandated reporter
  • Uphold high expectations for youth. 
  • Address youth behavior with a positive discipline approach that is fair, firm, consistent and kind;  helping youth take responsibility/accountability for their actions accompanied with appropriate consequences. 
  • Work with supervisor to support program needs and supervise assigned volunteers  
  • Responsible for conduct as a role model/mentor for youth.
  • Contributes to strategic planning and facilitates implementation of arts programming
  • Ensure clarity of goals, roles and responsibilities. 
  • Establish professional working relationships to achieve results. 
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the Club and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.  
  • Communicate with parents regarding member success and challenges. 

Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum two years’ experience working with youth ages 6-18 years old
  • Two years of experience planning and implementing visual arts programs for youth
  • Demonstrated ability in a variety of visual and/or performing art techniques
  • Demonstrated classroom management ability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Capacity to supervise group work
  • Efficient and effective planning and problem solving skills
  • Supportive, flexible disposition
  • Tech savvy, including proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, Google Work Space 
  • Reliable transportation

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position including standing at least 50% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must successfully complete all pre-employment screening requirements including:
    • Live Scan fingerprinting
    • Background check
    • Drug & Alcohol screening

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Educational background in visual and/or performing arts
  • Experience as a youth development professional in the Boys & Girls Club Movement
  • Cultural competence, ability to work with a diverse youth and people
  • First Aid & CPR Certification 
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

COMPENSATION:

Starting salary $20.46 to $21.50 per hour and based upon experience and qualifications.  Paid benefits package at Impact Leader II level consisting of accrual of up to 30 hours paid vacation, 30 hours paid sick leave, plus 40 hours of paid California Healthy Workplace Healthy Family sick leave, medical, vision, dental, life and disability insurance, pension and 403(b) plan investment options.  Professional development opportunities are available contingent upon
