TITLE : Literacy Director – School Based
DEPARTMENT : Operations, Designated School
REPORTS TO : Unit Director
CLASSIFICATION : Full-Time, Salary, Exempt
SALARY : $48,000 / yr.
HOURS : Monday – Friday, 10 : 00 AM – 7 : 00 PM;
POSITION SUMMARY : The Literacy Director ensures members receive high-quality literacy instruction. The Literacy Director leads the development and improvement for teachers via training, observations, model lessons, feedback conversations, data analysis and more. The Literacy Director serves as the literacy content expert and provides support on curriculum, high-quality interactions, and the science of teaching reading.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities) Leadership
- Coordinate and implement high-quality reading curriculum
- Facilitate professional development for teachers
- Observe teachers, provide feedback, and identify next steps to improve instruction in core ELA instruction for the purpose of support and not evaluation
- Monitor interventions conducted by the classroom teacher
- Model exemplar lessons
- Support lesson preparation using high-quality curriculum
- Model and support high-quality interactions with students
- Analyze data, identify trends, and support teachers to adjust instruction based on data
- Support teachers with effective parent communication and family involvement
- Communicate a belief in all students’ abilities to become successful readers
- Attend all required meetings and trainings
- Communicate with leadership team on school-wide literacy progress
Prepare Youth for Success
Reports severe infractions to the Unit Director and parents / guardians when applicable, understands and applies child and adolescent development principles.Communicates with a strength-based approach to develop positive relationships with all youth.Respects and honors cultural and human diversity.Identifies potential risk and protective factors for youth.Demonstrates the qualities of a positive role model.Interacts in a way that supports asset building.Resource Management
Coordinates (with the school administration) the use of building facilities for agencies contracted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida to provide additional after-school activities.Pursues relationships with community members and local businesses to provide additional resources and support to program components.Collection and analysis of data required by the Boys & Girls Clubs, the Duval County Public School System. These types of data include but are not limited to daily attendance, average monthly attendance, membership totals, session attendance, class attendance, student demographics, ages served, and academic activities offered.Strategic Planning
Plans and manages after-school programs at his / her sites which meet minimum program delivery standards.Partnership Development
Act as a community liaison to involve families and the community with the After-School Program.Work collaboratively with partner agencies.Programs and Services
Oversee the planning, coordination, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of all literacy program curriculums and other grant requirements.Incorporate site-specific literacy curriculum that will address reading deficiencies and interests that are specific to the designated site. Provide expectations and guidance to staff on program creation and delivery.Relationships
Internal - Maintain close, daily contact with Club professional staff to interpret and explain the organizational mission, program objectives, and standards, discuss issues, and provide / receive information. Has regular contact with members as needed to discipline, advise, and counsel.External - Maintains contact with external community groups, schools where the program is housed, members’ parents, and others to assist in resolving problems and to publicize the Club.QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS :
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a Florida Teaching Certificate; Reading Endorsement preferredMinimum of 3 effective years of experience as a certified ELA teacherProven results when working with struggling readersStrong knowledge of how children learn to readKnowledge and experience working with high-quality reading curriculumCPR and first aid certified or be willing to become certifiedManagement skills are necessary. Proven ability to supervise Club staff and volunteersKnowledge of (and access to) community organizations and assistance agencies are requiredMust possess excellent written and verbal skillsMust have the ability and desire to work with youth in a variety of environmentsMust have the ability to work independently and efficiently without direct supervisionAbility to pass DCF Level II background screening and drug testSUPERVISORY : This position is responsible for supervising other staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
This position generally works M – F, 10 AM – 7 PM, but may require longer hours outside of this schedule and occasional weekends when necessary. Most work is conducted inside an office environment, but occasionally requires outdoor events. Some travel between clubs and camp is required. Occasional overnight travel may be required.
