TITLE: Athletics Director - Aliberti Clubhouse

DEPARTMENT: Program

REPORTS TO: Clubhouse Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt, part-time (28 hours/week)

COMPENSATION: $18 - $20 per hour

BENEFITS: 40 hours of paid sick leave per year; access to free afterschool and out-of-school programs for your children.


The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. We currently serve more than 1,500 youth per year across our three clubhouse locations in Downtown Santa Cruz, Live Oak, and Scotts Valley.

The Athletics Director is responsible for the overall management, planning, coordination, and implementation of dynamic physical activity, sports, health and fitness programs within the Boys & Girls Club. This role involves planning and executing programs, events, and services, while ensuring a positive experience for all participants. These include running daily afterschool and summer physical activity programs and additional programs and/or sports leagues based on the needs and interests of youth in our community. The Athletics Director trains and supervises assigned staff and volunteers for various programming activities, and is responsible for general maintenance of the Athletics program area/supplies.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and execute a range of athletic programs, tournaments, camps, clinics, and other related activities. Coordinate schedules, games, and events, ensuring efficient use of the facilities and resources in coordination with other programs.
  • Develop and post weekly and monthly athletics program calendar. Promote and market athletics programs to Club members and local families via assembly, announcements, bulletin boards, flyers, online outreach and posted schedules. Update and maintain bulletin boards to be informative and attractive.
  • Implement proven youth development strategies and create a stable, supportive environment for children and teens ages 6 to 18. Specially designed programs concentrate on developing self-esteem, good health and social responsibility among Boys & Girls Club members, in alignment with our priority outcome areas of Character & Leadership Development, Healthy Lifestyles, and Academic Success.
  • Collaborate with fellow club professionals on cross-curricular programming, ensuring that athletics programs align with overall Clubhouse goals and schedules. Partner with staff at other Clubhouse locations to coordinate occasional intra-clubhouse programs.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise volunteers within the athletic department to support programs, tournaments, camps, clinics, and other related activities.
  • Plan, organize and implement daily athletic, health and fitness programs for youth ages 6-18 years old during our afterschool and summer programs.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for all participants, regardless of skill level or background.
  • Address participant inquiries, concerns, and feedback promptly and professionally.
  • Implement strategies to enhance participant retention and satisfaction.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe facility conducive to athletic activities.
  • Manage inventory of equipment, uniforms, and other supplies, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
  • Ability to communicate athletic program details, schedules, and updates to participants, volunteers, and parents through various channels.
  • Develop ways to increase program visibility to attract new participants.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with parents regarding their child(rens) successes and challenges.
  • Work with the Clubhouse Director on program pricing and budget management for athletic programs.
  • Plan and oversee the logistics of all athletic events, such as end of the season tournaments, clinics, camps and celebrations.
  • Oversee game day set-up and operations, including managing any volunteers within the program area.
  • Ensure that all participants are being recorded in the Club system for accurate attendance and reporting.


Knowledge and Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years work experience in a youth serving organization or school at a professional level planning and implementing activities based on the developmental needs of young people.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively plan, coordinate, organize, implement and evaluate a wide range of quality athletics programs for youth. Strong knowledge of sports rules and regulations, techniques, skills, and strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other programs/organizations, partners and/or contractors to deliver quality programs to Club members and potential members.
  • Experience working with children and knowledge of youth development. Ability to motivate youth and manage behavior challenges.
  • Ability to problem solve and navigate unexpected situations.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with parents, community partners and members of the general public.
  • Proficiency in using software for scheduling, communication, and data recording
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid certifications (training is available).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.


Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
  • Ability to work significant hours on their feet, including afterschool, evenings and weekends.
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs are often energetic, busy, and noisy environments. The Athletic Director will regularly work in this type of dynamic atmosphere.
