What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan?
Under limited direction from the Chief Finance Officer, the Controller uses specialized knowledge of GAAP and skills obtained through experience or CPA certification to provide timely, accurate and high-quality accounting services. Prepares, interprets, and summarizes financial data for use by management, board/committees, funding authorities, and resolves or recommends solutions to complex problems. Extensive knowledge of organizational structure, funding sources, policies & procedures as well as teamwork and strong communication skills required to meet business objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct and review the day-to-day work of accounting staff including preparation and review of workpapers, review notes a clearing of review notes
- Manage and oversee the preparation of financial reports in accordance with GAAP
- Analyze and interpret financial data and trends. Conduct ongoing analysis of financial performance and variances, identifying trends, and providing recommendations for improvement.
· Analyze budget to actual monthly, monitor spending and provide meaningful analysis of variances including recommended action plans.
· Provide financial analysis and forecasting to support strategic decision-making.
· Oversight of grant financial tracking and reporting
· Contribute to the development and implementation of both short-term and long-term plans and strategies
- Lead role in the annual budgeting process
- Lead role in annual year-end audit process with external auditors.
- Comply with all regulatory filing and reporting requirements including filing statements and reports.
- Assist in financial data required for grants or funding agencies
- May review or assist with liability insurance policies and or renewals including working with the insurance agent for additions and deletions
- May prepare and deliver written and oral presentations to committees/ or boards
- Remains current in non-profit accounting and GAAP accounting rules, regulations, policies and techniques
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
- Advanced concepts, principles, practices and procedures of accrual accounting and cash forecasting
- Advanced knowledge of GAAP
- Advanced knowledge of work paper preparation, general ledger management, budgeting, financial analysis, monthly reporting, financial statement preparation, release of temporary restricted net assets, and audit coordination within a non-profit environment
- Expert level user of Microsoft products particularly Excel
- Experience with accounting software systems required. Prior experience with Sage Intaact is preferred.

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business with focus of accounting or finance
- At least 7 years of professional level accounting experience with 3 years at the Controller level
- At least 2 years’ experience in a non-profit environment including hands-on experience in managing contributions and grants, including governmental funding
- CPA/MBA preferred
Salary : $100,000 - $130,000
