The Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Michigan is seeking a responsible and dedicated Summer Camp Counselor. As a Summer Camp Counselor, you will be responsible for the safety, well-being, and development of youth while at BGCSM. You will engage with youth in recreational, educational, and social activities, providing support and encouragement while promoting teamwork and a positive camp culture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise Campers: Ensure the safety, care, and supervision of campers at all times. Be a positive role model and maintain discipline in accordance with camp policies.
- Lead Activities: Organize and lead daily activities including outdoor games, arts and crafts, sports, team-building exercises, hikes, swimming, and other camp programs.
- Ensure Youth Safety: Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines, ensuring that campers are aware of and follow the camp rules. Monitor the health and emotional well-being of each camper.
- Provide Emotional Support: Offer encouragement, guidance, and support to campers, especially in cases of homesickness, conflicts, or personal challenges.
- Foster Positive Relationships: Build strong, trusting relationships with campers and fellow counselors, creating a supportive and inclusive camp environment.
- Assist in Camp Setup: Help with the preparation and setup of camp facilities, including organizing camp areas, preparing materials for activities, and ensuring cleanliness.
- Document Camper Progress: Record camper behavior, development, and any incidents that occur during the camp session. Communicate effectively with parents and camp leadership as necessary.
- Promote Camp Values: Foster a spirit of teamwork, inclusivity, and respect, and ensure that the camp’s values are promoted in every activity.
- First Aid & Emergency Response: Administer basic first aid and be prepared to respond to emergencies, including medical issues, injuries, and camper behavioral concerns.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children in an educational, recreational, or camp setting is preferred but not required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Leadership qualities with the ability to motivate and engage children.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and CPR (camp will often provide training if needed).
- Willingness to work long hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Physical stamina to lead activities in various outdoor environments.
