What are the responsibilities and job description for the Translator/Interpreter - Portuguese position at Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine?
Position Summary:
The Boys & Girls Club is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Translator to assist in translation services for members, families and staff. This position will be responsible for supporting the Front Desk/Membership Assistant with translation for members and staff. The translator will also support program staff to work effectively with children who are learning English in order for them to participate in activities within groups of children speaking more than one language.
The translator will be a floater who can move effectively among learning spaces and respond to needs. The ideal candidate will be passionate about youth development and eager to contribute to our mission of inspiring and enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as responsible, productive and caring citizens. A successful candidate will thrive in a fast paced and dynamic work environment.
This is a contracted position through the end of September 2025.
School year hours: 2:30p-6:30/7p
Summer hours: 10a-4p
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide spoken translation services during after-school programming for children 6 to 18 years old.
- Willing to assist with the delivery of afterschool programs.
- Interact with member parents who speak little or no English to help them understand Club policies, hours and programming.
- Assist parents in the registration process of their children as needed.
- Provide feedback to program leadership on learner needs as necessary.
- Build positive relationships with youth, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of belonging within the club community.
- Ensure a safe environment for all members by enforcing club safety policies and procedures.
- Flexibility to respond to translation needs as they arise.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Ability to speak fluently in Portuguese; Must be able to communicate in English.
- Additional Languages (Lingala and French) helpful
- Experience working with youth in a recreational, educational, or community setting preferred.
- Ability to multi-task while maintaining a calm and professional demeanor.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Preference for candidates who have worked in school or after-school settings.
- Must have valid working papers.
Compensation & Benefits:
- $23 per hour; 10-20 hours per week depending on language
- 2:30-6:30pm M-F
