Job Title: Step-Up Omaha Summer Coach: Career and Life Skills
Department: Scholarship and Outreach
Reports to: Chief Scholarship and Outreach Officer
Salary: Starting @ $17/hr.
Position Summary
To assist in the planning and execution of the Step-Up Omaha Summer Youth Employment Program’s Career Exploration/Job Readiness Program for youth ages 14 & 15, and provide the following services to teen participants:
- improve employability of teens ages 14 & 15,
- provide career counseling, and job readiness services, and
- increase financial knowledge of teens.
Serve as a “career mentor” to youth, providing individual and small group support to prepare them for employment and career development opportunities. Establish and/or expand relationships with local corporate and community partners that will contribute to the workforce development of teens. Work closely with Step Up Omaha organization leadership to ensure success of the Step-Up workforce development program.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree highly preferred; degree in social work or a related field preferred
Experience: Three (3) years of experience working with children or youth who are at-risk.
Must have a perceptive awareness of the needs and responses of children and the capacity to work well with adults; ability to work with extreme behaviors in children and adults; ability to organize work and prepare required reports; ability to handle conflict and difficult situations; flexibility and willingness to work evening and/or weekend hours, if needed to carry out job responsibilities; excellent communication skills to facilitate meetings with children and parents; basis computer skills and knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel required.
Required valid Driver’s License, and must have good driving record.
Job Skills
- Must have excellent casework and documentation skills.
- Knowledge of the stages of adolescent development and understanding of adolescent problems necessary.
- Must be able to work with children and adolescents as well as other agencies and/or systems.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
- Proficiency skills and utilization of Microsoft Office including: Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel. PowerPoint, Publisher, Internet savvy and data entry skills preferred.
- Ability to communicate with a variety of youth from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
Additional Requirements: Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed. Must possess a valid Nebraska driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Build and maintain positive relationships with program participants.
- Assist with recruitment initiative to increase participation in the workforce development program.
- Work with a team to coordinate and facilitate group workforce development program activities with 25 youth (e.g. Career Launch, Money Matters and possibly Junior Staff at the completion of the Step-Up Program).
- Provide individual guidance to participants about education and career pathways, resume/cover letter writing, mock interviews, personal branding, etc.
- Plan and coordinate opportunities for a variety of guest speakers to attend the program and share their education and career pathway experiences.
- Plan and coordinate off-site workforce development experiences for participants at a variety of workplaces.
- Plan and coordinate workforce development-related community events (e.g. job fairs, job shadow events, workplace tours)
- With assistance from BGCM leadership, build a network of stakeholders and partners who can provide knowledge, skill development and experiential learning opportunities for the participants to help them secure employment opportunities.
- With assistance from BGCM leadership, identify local organizations that need skilled employees; help develop a talent pipeline to benefit both teens and local employers.
- Prepares and submit timely, objective and measurable reports and documents such as service plans, goal plans, assessments, summaries, timesheets and attendance reports as necessary.
- Writes clearly and informatively, including reports, case notes and other written documentation.
