Philadelphia, PA Full Time
POSTED ON 4/7/2025

Teaching Resident

A full-time, competitively paid position at a first-rate college preparatory school for boys.

The Boys’ Latin of Philadelphia Teaching Fellowship attracts and prepares teaching candidates who will address the sharp racial, socioeconomic, and gender disparities in public education in Philadelphia. The Fellowship, created in partnership with Drexel University and The Center for Black Educator Development, consists of a (1) Teaching Apprenticeship, which exposes candidates considering a career in teaching to the instructional and student engagement duties of a teacher and a (2) Teaching Residency, which begins the formal education and practice that will result in teacher certification.

The Teaching Resident supports teaching and learning under the direction of experienced educators who are certified in the subject area in which the resident is pursuing certification. Gradually gaining responsibility over the course of the school year, the resident will promote and nurture the education of students by planning and tailoring courses of study; monitoring, assisting with, and correcting academic efforts; and providing a safe environment conducive to learning and character development. The resident will pursue certification in the desired subject area at Drexel University as part of a year-long program that covers foundational concepts and best practices in the method and practice of teaching. Boys’ Latin offers competitive pay and best-in-class benefits, including full payment of tuition and other expenses related to certification.

The resident will perform the following duties:

  • Support the mentor teacher in planning, developing, and delivering a college preparatory curriculum that is aligned with the PA Common Core standards and best practices.
  • Support the mentor teacher in assessing students regularly and using data to drive instruction as well as to provide remediation and enrichment based on individual student need and ability.
  • Support the mentor teacher in communicating students’ progress toward realizing academic goals, partnering with parents and school personnel to provide instructional and emotional support and resources.
  • Support the mentor teacher in building a classroom environment that is welcoming, academic, joyful, and safe.
  • Commit to the school’s extended day structure, serving students outside of the regular school day, and teaching in the Leadership Academy, Saturday School, and summer academy programs.
  • Enforce the student code of conduct and serve as a culture keeper of the Boys’ Latin mission.
  • Complete the year-long certification program at Drexel University, which begins in June and ends the following May.
  • Participate fully in all professional development programming offered by Drexel University, the Center for Black Educator Development, and Boys’ Latin, while meeting regularly with assigned mentor teacher.
  • Prepare for and take all required certification examinations, leveraging the support provided by Drexel University and Boys’ Latin.

The resident will demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Unwavering commitment to the school’s mission of preparing boys for success in college and beyond.
  • Desire to continuously learn and increase effectiveness as a professional to drive results among students.
  • Willingness to be flexible and go above and beyond to meet the needs of all students.
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with all members of the school community, including students, parents, faculty and staff members, administrators, and external partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • While there is no minimum GPA requirement, preferred candidates earned either a 3.0 cumulative GPA or a GPA of no less than 2.75 within the last two years of undergraduate coursework.
