The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation who will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing operations, activities, and personnel of the Parks, Cemetery, Forestry, Recreation, and Aquatics Divisions.

Work Week: Typically Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. Some weekend work required.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Assists the Director with developing and administering annual planning, budget, long and short-term goals and objectives, policies, regulations, and directives of the department;
  • Communicates with all related personnel in efforts to encourage, motivate, promote leadership, and encourage teamwork in accomplishing set forth objectives;
  • Confers with Department management team to track implementation of policies and receive specific recommendations and suggestions on departmental operations;
  • Assists the Director with the development and administration of the Department budget, including ensuring departments stay within approved budget, coordinating rate structures with Finance Director and City Administration, and reviewing capital improvement programs to coordinate with other projects;
  • Maintains public contact, including receiving and answering citizen complaints or questions regarding various aspects of departmental services;
  • Assists the Director with organizing and directing all department services and personnel to meet all goals and objectives as required, including all planning and implementation of employee training and staff development processes, recruitment, selection, periodic performance appraisals, termination processes, and development of staff;
  • Assists with the development of strategic plans
  • Conducts subdivision reviews;
  • Plans, manages, and coordinates major projects, including selecting and purchasing equipment, negotiating contracts, organizing and guiding project work groups, and scheduling activities based on project deadlines;
  • Serves as an in-house consultant on matters involving parks, recreation and related City services, including conducting research, preparing reports, and presenting findings at public meetings and to City officials;
  • Completes and maintains records and files of required reports, correspondence, and documentation;
  • Serves as Director of Parks & Recreation in their absence as required;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Attends board meetings, commission meetings, and other related meetings as needed;
  • Keeps designated personnel and others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audiovisual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizen’s questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field; AND
  • Significant (at least 7 years) related experience, with considerable (at least 3 years) responsibility in a supervisory capacity; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques used in planning, developing and managing park, recreation, aquatics, cemetery and forestry systems and programs;
  • Considerable knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances and programs;
  • Considerable knowledge of current principles and practices of public administration;
  • Considerable knowledge of the facilities and equipment used in a comprehensive park, recreation, aquatics, cemetery and forestry program;
  • Considerable knowledge of the techniques, methods and materials used in construction and maintenance of parks, cemetery, forestry, recreation, and aquatics facilities;
  • Considerable knowledge of budgetary principles within the public sector;
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of personnel administration;
  • Considerable knowledge of safety-related rules, laws, policies, procedures and techniques;
  • Ability to direct, supervise, train, evaluate and lead the work of others;
  • Ability to effectively lead, motivate, and direct all departmental personnel to ensure efficient operations;
  • Ability to effectively resolve employee problems in a fair and diplomatic manner;
  • Ability to effectively and accurately interpret and enforce all relevant codes, ordinances, laws and regulations;
  • Ability to effectively present and promote department projects to the general public and the news media;
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, control, and project costs of complex projects;
  • Ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters and have the ability to make appropriate judgment based on the analysis of the situation;
  • Ability to effectively allocate resources to achieve goals and objectives;
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals, including addressing and resolving citizen’s complaints and concerns;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional or Executive (CPRP or CPRE) certification or the ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire;
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory completion of appropriate post condition offer process.

Salary : $126,517 - $139,030
