The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an Engineering Inspector to support our Engineering Team. The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform inspections to ensure compliance with all relevant codes, ordinances, and laws. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City Engineer, Public Works personnel, consulting engineers, contractors, developers, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment and in the field, involving exposure to a wide variety of weather and terrain conditions.Bargaining Unit: Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE)Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-ExemptWork Week: Typically M-F, 8am-5pmExamples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)Performs inspections of City construction and improvement projects, including visiting construction sites, reporting and documenting any non-compliance issues to the project engineer, and ensuring the implementation of any necessary traffic control measures;Enforces contractor compliance with City, County, and State codes, ordinances, and laws;Attends preconstruction conferences for city public works projects;Reviews and compares project documentation, including as-built drawings submitted by consultants, with field notes, construction plans, and in-place installation to ensure the accuracy of all documentation of the new infrastructure;Reviews, approves, and inspects projects for encroachment permits, sidewalk/driveway & curb cut permits, sign installation or change permit, street cut permit, public right-of-way utility occupancy permit, fire service line, and elements of building permits;Assists with oversight of public infrastructure completed by private development;Performs warranty inspections to verify the acceptability of project installation and documentation and takes appropriate measures to ensure that all necessary repairs are completed;Researches subdivision plats, utility section maps, plans and specifications, and other documentation to provide information regarding existing utilities, easements, and other factors involving public works projects for the public, City departments, or consultants;Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
At least two years formal training or education beyond high school in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a closely related field (Bachelor's Degree is preferred); andSome (1-3 years) experience in utilities/public works construction; orAny combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Valid Driver's License; must obtain valid Montana Drivers' license within 60 days of employment; Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
