The City of Bozeman is in search of a part-time Library Assistant-Volunteer Coordinator, who embodies the City’s core values of leadership, integrity, service, and teamwork. The ideal candidate is communicative, responsive to public inquiries, outgoing, and detail oriented. The person in this position will work on the public service desks throughout the building, including the Creative Labs and Youth Services desks, and be one of the main points of contact regarding the library's robust and long-running adult volunteer program.

Work Week: 
Monday: 9:30am-4pm, 
Wednesday: 9:30am-2pm, 
Thursday: 12-4pm, 
Friday: 10-4pm 
20 hours/week
This job requires a varied work schedule that may include days, evenings, and weekends.  The schedule is subject to change depending on the needs of the Library and community.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

  • Explains library policies and procedures to patrons;
  • Provides assistance to patrons in locating various materials and services throughout the library, including interviewing patrons to determine individual needs, referring patrons to other community resources and libraries, demonstrating the use of the library catalog, self-checkout machines, and other electronic services;
  • Implements programs to inspire curiosity, exploration, and connection for all ages;
  • Collects fees for lost or damaged books, out of county library cards, and other fees;
  • Participates in marketing and communication efforts on behalf of the library;
  • Monitors the sorting, shelving, shifting, and condition of library materials in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System;
  • Coordinates the interlibrary loan program to request materials from other libraries, including borrowing materials using online databases, choosing the lending library, explaining policies to patrons; prepares materials for loan to other libraries, and making appropriate changes to the online circulation system, as assigned;
  • Coordinates volunteers, including working with Department Heads to determine needs, participating in the selection of volunteers, providing training, tracking hours, organizing volunteer appreciation, as assigned;
  • Coordinates meeting room reservations using booking software as assigned;
  • Supports marketing efforts for the Library, working closely with the marketing team to develop and maintain marketing plan, edit the website, post on social media, create digital media, and make flyers, as assigned;
  • Compiles key statistics for monthly and annual reports to governing bodies;
  • Regularly attends and participates in staff meetings;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
  • Bachelor's Degree; AND
  • Some (1 - 3 years) library computer experience; OR
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • Substantial knowledge of library functions, services, resources, policies, and procedures;
  • Substantial knowledge of specific Department materials and resources;
  • Substantial knowledge of library catalogs, indexes, reference materials, circulating and non-circulating collections, email, social networking tools, and audio-visual equipment;
  • Substantial knowledge of OCLC WorldCat and FirstSearch;
  • Substantial knowledge of print and electronic reference resources;
  • Substantial knowledge of local community resources, research, and other reference materials;
  • Substantial knowledge of the Internet and other electronic sources;
  • Substantial knowledge of general issues and current events;
  • Substantial knowledge of basic math;
  • Substantial knowledge of child development and behavior;
  • Ability to use library equipment employed in all phases or functions of assigned duties, including basic computer operation, automated materials handler, microfilm, microfiche, copy machine, and cash register;
  • Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons;
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor computer problems and other equipment malfunctions;
  • Ability to perform advanced searches on the automated catalog, Internet, and related sources;
  • Ability to sort, file, and retrieve information according to the Dewey Decimal System;
  • Ability to effectively present library programs including perform readings and storytelling;                
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
  • Foreign language fluency is desirable, but not required;
  • Children's Services: Must have at least one (1) year of experience working with and/or teaching children;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
