What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator position at Bradford County Road Department?
This position reports directly to the Road Supervisor under the Department of Public Works.
MAJOR FUNCTION:
Under direction of Road Supervisor this person performs skilled tasks in the operation of motorized heavy equipment utilized in support of highway maintenance or construction. Is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of any of the heavy equipment owned by the county.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must be able to operate large bulldozer in clearing and grubbing rights-of-way and spreading and grading roadway materials; large road grader in grading roadway shoulders and reshaping ditches and back slopes, operates hydra scoop in digging and clearing ditches and cutting down slopes. Must be able to operate front-end loader, backhoe, track hoe, tractor, side blade, batwing mowers, forklifts, road packer, dump truck, tractor-trailer, chipper truck and other miscellaneous smaller equipment. Responsible for cleaning and routine preventive maintenance of assigned equipment and completion of maintenance records. Will be responsible for the serviceability, cleanliness and use of any personal protective equipment required in the operation of equipment. Attendance as scheduled at assigned place of duty. Must attend safety meetings as required. Performs additional duties as assigned under the Public Works Department.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Knowledge of Bradford County Road System is preferred.
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires occasional physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Work involves exposure to extreme heat and cold, noise, strong odors, smoke, dust, pollen and possible toxic or caustic conditions. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires on-call 24 / 7 during any county disaster or emergency.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess high school diploma or GED, have valid Florida Driver’s License class “B” (preferred). Must have a minimum of one to three years related experience. Must pass pre-employment drug screen and physical.
