Overview
The Controller is responsible for complex accounting activities associated with maintaining ledger accounts and for developing and reviewing financial statements and reports for properties. The Controller is responsible for leadership in the department with an emphasis on development and training of staff while directing and overseeing activities of property accountants and A/P & A/R team. The Controller reports to the CFO.
Location: Indianapolis, IN, 46240 – Hybrid
Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm

- Directly supervise property accounting department staff: commercial accountants, residential accountants, accounts payable & accounts receivable.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, performance management and development of staff.
- Establishes workflows and assigns properties and portfolios for effective and efficient completion of tasks.
- Review property accountants monthly financial reports to be distributed to property management teams and ownership for conformance with accounting requirements and principles.
- Ensure the accurate and timely dissemination of financial statements to owners.
- Oversees and reviews records of financial transactions to determine accuracy and completeness of entries, including accounts receivable and accounts payable transactions.
- Ability to record complex business transactions in the general ledger: property purchases and sales, entry of previous property management company financial data into accounting system.
- Property bank account administration including periodic monitoring & auditing of user permissions.
- Responds to and resolves issues and requests from property management teams and clients regarding the accounting activities of their assets.
- Research open accounting issues and recognize potential issues and/or conflicts so corrective action can intercept and minimize issues.
- Understands property cash balances and prepares cash projections for owners and property managers to determine when owner distributions/contributions are necessary.
- Perform audit liaison responsibilities for internal and external financial audits.
- Assist the Property Management team with the annual CAM reconciliation process.
- Ensure critical payment dates are met (property taxes, debt payments, insurance, etc.).

Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance, CPA and/or Masters in Accountancy preferred
- 7 years of accounting supervisory experience
- 10 years professional level accounting experience in the real estate industry required
- Strong written and verbal communication, attention to detail, proven analytical skills, organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook required
- Yardi software experience preferred
