Position Title: Paralegal
Department: President’s Office
Reports to: Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel
Appointment: Full-Time (12 months)
Status: Exempt
Summary
The paralegal works directly with the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel on legal matters, risk management issues, preventative law projects and special projects, as assigned. Further, this position provides administrative support to the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with assigned legal matters such as legal research, claims, litigation, complaints, hearings, meetings, board governance/resolutions, internal processes and proceedings, contracts, licensing, subpoenas and document requests, etc., working closely with other departments when appropriate.
- Perform preventative law functions such as assisting with policies and procedures, facilitating risk management efforts, creating forms and compliance tools, managing records, serving on committees, assisting with training and monitoring and tracking legal trends and risks.
- Provide administrative support to the Office of General Counsel such as budgets and expense tracking, filing, creating forms and presentations, drafting documents, maintaining memberships, arranging travel and performing general office management duties
- Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in college and university law and in other related areas.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- Certification or associate’s degree in paralegal studies (bachelor’s degree is preferred)
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a paralegal or comparable role
- Strong research skills (Westlaw or Lexis is preferred), attention to detail and time management
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in a diverse community
- Ability to create, compose, and edit high-quality written materials
- Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions
- Experience in preparing legal reports or memoranda
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to gather and organize legal evidence
- Knowledge of legal contracts, agreements and related documentation
- Ability to draft legal documents, such as legal responses, position statements and briefs
- Knowledge of current and developing legal issues and trends
- Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research
Working Conditions
- Very limited physical effort required.
- Very limited exposure to physical risk.
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
