JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: School Nurse
QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred
- A valid South Dakota Registered Nurse license
- One to three years of experience in the health care field, preferably community health, pediatrics and/or mental health
- Physical ability to assess vision, hearing, carry equipment and perform CPR
- Must be able to provide physical assessment
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills

- Nine (9) months
SUPERVISES:
Performance Responsibilities:
- Consults with administrators to determine goals and services.
- Serves as a team member in identifying, evaluating, and providing services for children.
- Collects information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner.
- Uses data collected about health and developmental status of the student to determine a nursing diagnosis.
- Develops and maintains a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions that are unique to that student’s needs.
- Serves as a liaison between the school and community health and welfare agencies and the medical profession.
- Focuses on prevention of illness, disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems.
- Assists with the development and maintenance of student health records.
- Coordinates building health day screenings and physical exams.
- Communicates with colleagues, parents and students.
- Facilitates referral of students and families to appropriate district and community services.
- Participates in ongoing professional growth.
- Administers medications, treatments, and procedures as directed by the student’s physician and District policy.
- Trains and supervises staff in delegated tasks.
- Provides health education for students, staff and parents.
- Maintains and assures confidentiality of information.
- Inventories and requests equipment and materials needed in assigned buildings for health care.
- Maximizes instructional and nursing time.
- Participates in professional and/or community organizations.
- Complies with school District policies and operating procedures.
- Must be able to lift up 35 pounds intermittently during an eight hour day.
- Requires constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; intermittent speaking and walking.
- Requires frequent keyboarding, repetitive motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers.
- Standing, turning, and stooping are required.
- Often requires wearing gloves as a protective device.
- Occasionally subjected to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or extreme noises.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular attendance is required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job is to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of support services personnel.
Salary : $45,008 - $46,716
