Brandywine Valley SPCA, in collaboration with DC Health, is transitioning to provide animal sheltering and control services in Washington, DC. This expansion brings our expertise to a new region, with DC Health as a valued partner in establishing a strong foundation and local impact. The Community Engagement Manager will engage in the research, planning, implementation, and evaluation of all community outreach activities necessary to build awareness of the BVSPCA’s mission, vision, programs and services and achievements.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Engagement
· Develops strategic and annual community relations plans and budgets in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer
· Provides monthly, annual, and periodic reporting for all of the community engagement activities.
· Maintains department spending according to established budget parameters.
· Coordinate and supervise the development and implementation of community outreach activities that ensure high visibility, brand recognition and regular exposure of the BVSPCA in the community.
· Organize and manage off-site adoption events to promote adoption and inform the public of the services available at and provided by the BVSPCA.
· Establish and administer Pet Food Pantry program to support pet parents with financial constraints or hardships. Provide data on program participation and impact.
· Coordinate and assist in managing free vaccination clinics for residents of the District. Track and report out on these efforts.
· Ensures the BVSPCA is represented in professional manner to the public at all times.
· Assists with the planning and implementation of fundraising events as deemed appropriate.
· Handle shelter animals at events or to assist volunteers and/or staff; provide transport for events when necessary.
· Other job responsibilities as assigned.
Youth Programs
- Supports implementing Critter Camp and school visits when necessary
- Ensures programming adequately represents the policies and ideology of the BVSPCA and effectively engages young people in the organization’s mission
- Manages and expands existing programs, such as Birthday Parties
- Creates a catalog of activity workshops that can be delivered by volunteers, such as kong stuffing parties and cat toy making; includes building the plans, providing training, and maintaining supplies
Client and Community Service
- Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
- Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events.
- Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate.
Diversity and Inclusiveness
- Work effectively with individuals and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures.
Safety
- Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practice.
- Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
- Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in marketing/public relations, community relations, education or equivalent degree;
- Minimum three to five years’ experience in public relations, event planning and volunteer management.
- Minimum of one year customer service and supervisory experience.
- Proven public speaking and project management experience.
- Proven writing ability and ability to coordinate events/programs.
- Proven skill in interacting with all age groups.
- Animal/Environmental welfare experience is helpful.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proven and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Knowledge of volunteer program coordination and event planning
- Confident public speaker
- Proficient with computers
- Interest and knowledge of animal welfare related issues
- Ability to develop and deliver presentations aimed at various age groups
- Strong organizational and project management skills
- Ability to use sound judgment when dealing with volunteers, clients, animal-related concerns and confidential information
- Knowledge of animal breed, behavior, and handling helpful
Other:
- Must be at least 21 years of age (required for insurance purposes)
- Valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work Environment:
- Shared cubicle/office space
- Exposure to animals
- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, animal bites and scratches
- Exposure to high noise levels when in kennels
- Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions
Physical Activities:
- Able to drive, stand, bend, squat, walk, and talk for up to eight hours a day
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Able to work a flexible schedule with regular weekend and evening shifts

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
