POSITION SUMMARY:
The Test Lab Engineer is a key contributor to research, development, and quality assurance efforts, responsible for conducting initial sample inspections, evaluating material returns, and performing comprehensive product testing. This hands-on position requires expertise in both hand and power tools, along with the ability to design and construct custom test fixtures.
The Test Lab Engineer will execute test plans ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and internal specifications. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure safety, performance, and legal compliance of our products prior to market launch.
This role translates new and existing codes and standards into detailed executable actions that comply with ISO 17025 requirements. The position also involves building and maintaining test equipment to meet both industry and company protocols.
This is an onsite position (5 days per week) based out of Novi, MI.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Product Testing & Compliance Verification
- Implement test procedures and protocols to ensure compliance to standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
- Conduct testing of products and components in compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., UPC, CSA, CEC, DOE, Low lead, PFAS, RoHS, REACH, IEC, ISO).
- Interpret product standards, regulatory and customer requirements and translate them into procedures and work instructions.
- Prepare and maintain detailed test documentation, reports, and records of conformity.
- Develop and implement a Total Preventive Maintenance (TPM) program for all lab equipment to minimize downtime and ensure consistent test accuracy.
- Schedule and oversee routine maintenance, calibration, and inspection of testing instruments and systems.
- Maintain detailed maintenance logs, service records, and calibration certificates in compliance with internal quality systems and external standards (e.g., ISO 17025).
- Identify aging, underperforming, or obsolete equipment and recommend upgrades or replacements to support evolving testing requirements and newer technologies.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action processes for product failures and/or compliance issues.
- Assist in the development and improvement of testing standards and SOPs.
- Work closely with engineering, quality, product compliance, and manufacturing teams to ensure products are designed and evaluated to meet compliance targets.
- Present test results to key stakeholders with clarity and technical accuracy.
- Provide guidance during product development to help identify regulatory requirements early in the design cycle.
- Participate in design reviews and provide feedback based on test data and field performance.
- Assist in preparing technical files, declarations of conformity, and other regulatory documentation.
- Monitor changes in relevant standards and regulations to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Recommend and implement improvements to lab procedures, workflows, and equipment for greater accuracy and efficiency.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Minimum two years of experience working in a test lab environment
- Proven hands-on experience conducting product or component testing.
- Strong knowledge of industry testing standards (e.g., ASTM, UPC,).
- Experience with test equipment and instrumentation (data acquisition systems, environmental chambers, etc.).
- Experience in plumbing, building materials or manufacturing industries.
- Solid understanding of measurement techniques
- Excellent problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in computer programming
- Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to write clear, comprehensive test reports
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
