Job Description: Enologist/Lab Technician
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Enologist/Lab Tech with at least two years of experience in a winery laboratory. This role is integral to ensuring quality control throughout the winemaking process, from harvest to bottling. This position performs a variety of analyses, assists with cellar operations, and contributes to the overall efficiency of the winery.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES:
- Analytical Testing: Perform various analyses in wine production, including Total/Titratable Acid (TA), pH, Free and Total Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), Volatile Acidity (VA), Residual Sugar (RS), and Alcohol concentrations. Make solutions as required for analyses.
- Data and Laboratory Management: Responsible for all, analytical results, reports, and trials. Coordinate analyses to ensure efficient production workflow, bottling schedule, and cellar/barrel activities.
- Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory. Order, stock, and manage lab supply inventory. Perform general maintenance and ensure hygiene of laboratory facilities.
- Harvest and Cellar Operations: Assist with harvest activities, additions, inoculations, fermentation monitoring, barrel topping, bottling activities, fruit processing, yeast inoculation, sample collection, and other assigned tasks.
- Safety: Help ensure staff compliance with safety requirements. Assist Winemakers and Cellar Master in developing and executing safety policies.
- Quality Control: Implement and manage wine QC program processes and procedures.
- Bottling: Conduct bottling QC, including assisting with tank preparation and performing bottled wine evaluations.
8. Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repetitively.
- Ability to climb and utilize stairs, catwalks, and ladders safely.
- Ability to work in a winery environment, including exposure to temperature variations, noise, and chemicals.
Skills and Experience:
1. Degree in Enology, Fermentation Science, Chemistry, or a related field preferred. Relevant experience may substitute for educational requirements.
2. 2 years of experience in a winery lab or similar setting.
3. Working knowledge of lab and winery processes and procedures.
4. Proficiency in Excel and Google Docs. Winery database management (Innovint) a strong plus.
5. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
6. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
7. Ability to lift and move 50 pounds repetitively.
8. Ability to climb and utilize stairs, catwalks, and ladders safely.
9. 2-5 years related experience preferred.
