What are the responsibilities and job description for the Construction Estimator position at Brayman Construction Corporation?
The Estimator in the Foundation Division will use his or her understanding of foundation construction to organize the bid items and activities, complete accurate quantity take-offs, and develop item pricing in coordination with the techniques, methods and standard practices of the industry. The Estimator will interact with estimating management, project operations and other members of the estimating staff to prioritize and meet estimating schedule requirements. The Estimator may perform site visits and evaluate and price methods to construct a variety of projects from simple to complex.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Quantifies the components of a project by utilizing available take off tools (electronic digitizers, AutoCAD, pre-formulated spreadsheets).
- Works with the estimating team bidding the project to build the estimate and price assigned items of work utilizing company electronic estimating system.
- Prepares work to be accomplished by gathering information and requirements, setting priorities.
- Prepares and presents relevant bid package information for project estimate review.
- Visits the project site to understand site conditions, restrictions, and attends Pre-bid Meetings.
- Develops preliminary construction schedules base on the project information provided in the plans and specifications.
- Solicits and obtains timely quotes from vendors and subcontractors for materials and services that meet project specification requirements.
- Reviews scopes and qualifications of vendor and subcontractor quotes and provides evaluation and summary of pricing.
- Maintains cost keys and pricing database by-products and geographic locations.
- Resolves cost discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.
- Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
- Maintains quality service by following organization standards.
- Maintains continuity among corporate, division, and local work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong ability to prioritize estimating tasks and workflow to meet estimate review schedules and bid dates.
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand project plans, specifications and scope of work.
- Ability to accurately understand project plans, specifications and geotechnical reports to interpret project scope of work.
- Ability to remain flexible and efficient in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent independent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficient with electronic estimating system; HCSS estimating system experience is preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related field is required.
- Minimum of two years of related experience as an Estimator or office/field engineer is required.
- Experience with foundation Design-Build projects and foundation design parameters preferred.
- Experience in scheduling and P6 scheduling software is preferred.
- Experience with HCSS estimating system is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Works both indoors and outdoors in a construction environment that can be dirty and noisy.
- Wears appropriate protective clothing and equipment when necessary.
- May require travel.
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Stands frequently and walks about the work areas.
- Occasionally stretches up and across when completing daily tasks.
- Squatting, crouching or kneeling may be required occasionally.
- Twisting the body or neck may be required occasionally.
- Bending is occasionally required to facilitate the lifting of items used daily.
- Contact with skin irritants or water may occur during certain processes.

Safety Sensitive Position
This is a Safety Sensitive Position requiring work on project sites, including federal projects. Project sites contain various safety hazards associated with heavy construction. This position may require working at heights, in confined spaces, around heavy equipment, and under constantly changing circumstances. This position may also entail project site work at night and on weekends on an as needed basis. This position will be subject to more stringent drug testing and compliance policies associated with our status as a Federal Contractor.
