SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Division Manager, duties may include some or all of the following: Inspects food service establishments, on-site sewage facilities (OSSF), daycare and foster homes, and pools; participates in vector surveillance, instruction of the public in food safety rules and practices including conducting food handler classes and other public outreach events; investigates public nuisance complaints and foodborne illness complaints.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include all or a combination of the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Conducts food service inspections, including reviewing and approving construction and remodeling plans;

2. Teaches food handler’s classes and speaks at other educational events;

3. Investigates food establishment complaints, including foodborne illness complaints and initiates appropriate corrective actions;

4. Reviews plans and inspects both new and existing OSSF’s as assigned to ensure compliance with state and local ordinances, rules, and regulations;

5. Investigates OSSF complaints and initiates appropriate corrective actions;

6. Performs daycare and foster home inspections;

7. Inspects pools for compliance with state requirements;

8. Participates in vector surveillance program;

9. Responds to environmental and public health complaints both inside and outside the city limits;

10. Performs general administrative work, including data entry, generating reports, preparing notice of violation letters, and completing of timesheets and other required reports; and

11. Complies with policies and procedures as outlined in the current “Employee Handbook and Personnel Policies of Brazos County, Texas” and Health District and division supplements.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a non-supervisory position.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree with at least 30 hours in basic or applied science from an accredited college or university.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Laws governing food-service facilities and inspection practices; laws governing OSSFs; personnel policies and procedures.

SKILL/ABILITY TO

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with health district employees, county employees, representative of governmental agencies, and the general public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds; operate standard word processing and spreadsheet software; work independently; maintain confidentiality of HIPAA information; operate surveying equipment; read building plans; and handle chemicals safely.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Texas Driver’s License; Registered Sanitarian in the State of Texas; and hold or be able to obtain a Designated Representative License from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

A Pesticide Non-Commercial Applicator License with the Texas Department of Agriculture; a Certified Pool Operator; and a Certified Pool Inspector Certification may be needed to fulfill job duties and responsibilities depending on assignment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, and to identify and distinguish colors.

Ability to work weekends and evenings, and respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours when needed The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employee must frequently and simultaneously perform multiple tasks, work closely with others as part of a team, and work under time pressures. The employee may face possible exposure to diseases and illnesses. There is a potential to inhale hazardous materials. Employee may be exposed to extreme weather conditions while conducting job duties. This job requires some travel and fieldwork.
