What are the responsibilities and job description for the Citizen Corps Coordinator, Public Safety Planning position at Brazos Valley Council of Governments?
The Citizen Corps Coordinator assists administering the Brazos Valley Council of Governments Citizen Corps program. The Brazos Valley Citizen Corps Planner serves as a trainer and manager for the regional Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT); performs outreach services, planning, organization, recruitment, and coordination of Citizen Corps volunteers and programs. Coordinates with emergency management, first responders, VOADs, community organizations, Council of Government departments, and local governments in planning, development, and implementation of emergency preparedness and response program goals. This position works under limited supervision with latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Public Safety Program Manager.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
1. Develop and maintain Community Emergency Response Team capabilities in the region.
2. Assist in educating the community on the need for emergency preparedness.
3. Provide CERT Basic Training throughout the region.
4. Provide emergency response and preparedness training to VOADs, CERT, Churches, ISDs, citizens, private sector, and other organizations as deemed appropriate.
5. Research and analyze member or community needs to determine program directions and goals.
6. Prepare presentations and present to community groups to explain and interpret agency purposes, programs and policies.
7. Maintain active involvement and relationships with community organizations and programs.
8. Serve as Volunteer Coordinator in time of emergencies or for emergency preparedness type events.
9. Tracks and compiles data on a monthly basis for reporting purposes. Monthly reports due to program manager as assigned.
10. Manage Citizen Corps equipment and supply inventory.
11. Attend emergency preparedness type meetings.
12. Assist with maintenance and analysis of volunteer database.
13. Assist program manager in activities including but not limited to proposals grant writing, special events, and direct sponsor contact.
14. React positively and courteously in dealing with volunteers, other organizations, personnel and the general public; perform duties in a professional manner with attention to accuracy and detail.
15. Perform other tasks as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent with some college in the following or related fields; social service, political science, social work, sociology, psychology, human resources, or planning. Previous work experience or education in related area is desired pertaining to emergency management, volunteer programs, a first responder discipline, instructor, or planner. Requires lifting of mannequins, response equipment, and medical kits.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrate sound supervisory and management skills; knowledge of volunteer programs and community resources; and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local, state, and federal officials, staff and private sector is required. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Must have experience with social perceptiveness, complex problem-solving skills, judgment and decision making, systems evaluation, customer and personal service, and education and training. Weekend work may be required along with the use of a personal vehicle to travel to and from meetings and trainings with travel reimbursement offered.
SALARY RANGE:
$17.00 - $20.00 per hour, depending on qualifications.
