Position Profile:

We are searching for a skilled and detail-oriented assistant engineer to join our team. The building engineer assistant responsibilities include completing all tasks assigned by the Building Engineer, safely operating equipment, and working alongside other engineers in the planning, design, development, and evaluation stages of projects. You should be able to diagnose problems and follow instructions in fast-paced environments.

To be successful as a building engineer assistant, you should be passionate about your engineering discipline and demonstrate strong logical and critical thinking skills. Outstanding candidates are able to keep track of project expenses, write detailed reports, and ensure consistent quality assurance standards.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Understanding and carrying out all tasks given by the Building Engineer that include but not limited to building repairs such as replacement of all bathroom fixtures, addressing minor plumbing issues, assembling office furniture, small wall repairs, replacing light bulb ballasts, exterior building maintenance, minor landscape needs;
  • Coordinate with the Building Engineer to be on-site with vendors, building inspectors and report discovery;
  • Monitor and report any safety related issues to the Building Engineer and or Facilities Director;
  • Performing regular inspections of equipment and scheduling maintenance or repairs;
  • Calibrating and troubleshooting equipment as required;
  • Providing assistance to BFC staff to address facilities needs as needed and share work details with the Facilities Director and Building Engineer when working with other directors or staff;
  • Inspecting and maintaining inventory and reporting inconsistencies as well as ordering more materials;
  • Be willing and able to drive BFC trucks and vans to transport facilities equipment and materials;
  • Evaluating all products and processes and ensuring standardization of quality assurance measures in collaboration with Building Engineer;
  • Conduct weekly building walk-throughs to document and address maintenance findings with the Building Engineer and Facilities Director;
  • Work with Facilities Director and Building Engineer to update and maintain BFC facilities vendor list, maintenance request, and invoicing files electronically;
  • Maintain vendor database and work order spreadsheets and promptly respond to maintenance emails;
  • Collaborate with the Facilities team to implement, monitor, and participate in building project oversight;
  • Participating in various learning experiences, which may include attending workshops and training sessions;
  • Coordinate with Reception staff and liaison with community partners primary contact when they are using BFC facilities for community events, meetings, and spaces;
  • Available to be scheduled with notice for BFC and community partner events to open and close/lock buildings during non-business hours, escort guests to agreed upon areas of the building, and provide assistance as needed;
  • Work with the Facilities Team to create, implement, and evaluate systems to improve productivity and a positive environment;
  • Collaborate with Building Engineer on succession planning.

Building Engineer Assistant Requirements:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and a strong interest in the relevant engineering discipline;
  • A completed apprenticeship or similar experience is recommended;
  • Valid driver's license;
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills;
  • Familiarity with handling and operating tools of the trade;
  • Ability to follow instructions and to collaborate with others;
  • Ability to work with volunteers in a professional and collaborative manner;
  • Experience working with Google Organization & Productivity Tools (Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, Excel) and /or ability to learn new technology systems;
  • Willing to learn and carry out Bread for the City's commitments to building a socially just, racially equitable, and gender affirming culture.
