We’re seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, simulation, and development of mechanical systems for large-scale kinetic sculptures. This role offers the chance to engineer motion systems that will be viewed and experienced by audiences worldwide. You’ll work across all stages of development, from ideation and prototyping to fabrication, production, and installation.
As part of a hands-on team, you’ll collaborate with the artist, as well as electrical engineers and software developers, to design systems that meet both artistic and functional goals. You’ll solve challenges that require innovative thinking and attention to detail, delivering reliable, manufacturable, and visually impactful systems.
- Lead Mechanical Design: Design and optimize motion systems, including motors, bearings, actuators, and structural frameworks.
- Prototyping and Testing: Build and test prototypes to validate designs and ensure performance standards are met.
- Performance Analysis: Conduct tolerance analysis and apply GD&T standards to ensure precision and manufacturability.
- System Integration: Collaborate with electrical and software teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical components.
- Fabrication Management: Create detailed CAD models, technical drawings, and assembly instructions, working directly with manufacturers and vendors.
- Global Installations: Travel internationally (<10% of the time) to oversee installations, ensuring all systems perform flawlessly onsite.
- Creative Ideation: Contribute to early-stage brainstorming, using sketches and models to communicate mechanical concepts.
- Project Planning: Support project development timelines and assist in estimating fabrication costs for budgets.
- Experience: 8 years in mechanical engineering, with expertise in electromechanical systems and motion design.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced skills in CAD (SolidWorks or similar) and simulation tools (e.g., FEA).
- Manufacturing Knowledge: In-depth understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication techniques, and finishing methods.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Ability to solve complex challenges while balancing cost, performance, and artistic goals.
- Hands-On Expertise: Skilled in prototyping and using tools such as CNC machines, laser cutters, and 3D printers.
- Communication: Strong ability to explain and visualize concepts through sketches and technical documentation.
