Breaking Barriers is seeking compassionate individuals to join our overnight support team, dedicated to assisting participants with physical and intellectual disabilities. This role focuses on fostering genuine connections and ensuring that respect and dignity are consistently upheld throughout the supported shift. Job Details/Responsibilities:

  • Support our program participants in making sure everything is going alright- always keeping their comfort and safety at heart.
  • Respond calmly and efficiently to unexpected situations, promoting security in the individuals we support.
  • Help with nighttime routines in a respectful and dignified manner.
  • Keep well established and conducive professional boundaries with the people we work with.
  • Provide reminders and prompting on important night time tasks, such as taking medication.
  • Be there to offer a calming presence if they wake up feeling uneasy, and in it, helping them process difficult nights.
  • Set things up for a smooth start to our participants day, assigning them in arranging everything they need to help maintain their independence.
  • Maintain clear notes about the night so that everyone involved in their care is up to date.
  • Share any important updates or observations with your team to ensure continuous, coordinated care.
  • Engage with training and updates in the field of care to keep bringing your best to what you do.
  • Follow best practices that keep you, and the people you support, safe and well-cared for.

Beyond the details of the specific position, we find people are usually curious about the company. Breaking Barriers is an employee-centered company. We view our clients as human beings and our staff as partners. I know there's a lot of lip service out there, so here's some concrete details.

  • The industry turnover rate is between 25-40% depending on the service. Ours is 8%. The industry 1-year retention rate is 39%. Breaking Barriers: 80%.
  • Every person who works at Breaking Barriers does at least 4 hours of direct support services per week. Doesn't matter if you're part time in billing, upper management, or one of the owners. Everyone is doing the same work you are, every week. Your boss will not be out of touch, and they will understand what you do.
  • Our written policy states that hourly employees are only required to respond to communication on the days they work. When you're off... you're off. Everything is scheduled in advance and you cannot be called into work.
  • Our staff choose the locations they are able to work, the amount of hours they work, and when they're available. BB does not schedule our employees outside of those limitations. Ever.

Honestly I'm extremely proud of what we've built in the metro, and extremely excited seeing so much similar, positive growth in Rochester.
