Project Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and motivated summer intern to serve as a project manager in support of a scientific collaborative aimed at the identification of biomarkers of type 1 diabetes progression and response to therapeutic intervention. This collaborative will bring together stakeholders, industry representatives, clinicians, and scientists to accelerate the clinical testing of therapies. The intern will play a critical role in facilitating collaboration among team members, organizing project workflows, and ensuring effective communication. Their primary responsibilities will include scheduling and managing meetings, tracking the status of various project components, and compiling a comprehensive final report summarizing the collaborative’s progress, structure, and future directions.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Meeting Coordination
    • Scheduling and organizing virtual meetings for the collaborative.
    • Preparing and distributing agendas in advance.
    • Recording meeting minutes, tracking agenda items, and ensuring follow-up on key tasks.
  • Project Tracking and Organization
    • Develop and maintain project timelines.
    • Tracking the progress of various workstreams.
  • Communication and Documentation
    • Serve as the point of contact for collaborative members, facilitating smooth information flow.
    • Draft regulator project updates.
    • Organize and maintain a shared document repository.
  • Final Report Development
    • Compile a final report summarizing the progress and future directions of the collaborative.
    • Integrate input from team members to ensure scientific accuracy and strategic coherence.
    • Create supporting visuals to enhance the report’s clarity and impact.

Expected Learnings

While working on this project, the intern will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in managing scientific projects, including coordinating meetings, tracking deliverables, and managing timelines.
  • Get exposure to how interdisciplinary teams work together to tackle complex research questions, with a focus on biomarker discovery in autoimmune diseases.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of biomarker identification processes in type 1 diabetes, including the biological and statistical methods used for validation.
  • Get experience drafting clear meeting summaries, status reports, and a professional final report.
  • Develop insight into how scientific collaborations are structured, including goal-setting and stakeholder engagement.
  • Get practical experience in identifying and addressing roadblocks to keep scientific projects on track.

Required Skills/Experience

The following skills/experience are required for applicant consideration:

  • Education: Currently enrolled in a graduate program and actively pursuing a Master’s or Doctorate in immunology, biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, scientific communication, or a related field.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated experience organizing and managing projects, either through research internships, coursework, or extracurricular activities.
  • Scientific Literacy: Basic understanding of biological concepts as needed for understanding and participation in meetings and discussions.
  • Communication: Strong scientific writing skills, experience drafting research summaries, reports, or project documentation.
  • Technical: High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), experience with reference management software (e.g., EndNote).
  • Organizational: Must have demonstrated experience highlighting an excellent attention to detail, time-management, and multitasking skills.
  • Teamwork: Strong interpersonal skills, with an ability to work both independently and collaboratively as necessary.

The following skills/experience is highly preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience with project management software (e.g., Trello, Asana, Microsoft Project).
  • Previous work experience as a scientific project manager.
  • Previous intern experience in an industry setting.

Hourly Rate: $18/hour

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and infrequently up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
