General Summary

The Membership and Special Events Manager is responsible for all aspects of the Baton Rouge Zoo annual pass program including maintenance of the large database, supervision of Guest Services Associate sales staff, membership mailings, and processing memberships. Facilitates planning, preparation and implementation of the Zoo's established signature events as well as researching potential new events. Creates and maintains on a daily basis the Zoo's social media presence including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.

Education Required : Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university.

Area of Study (major) Required : Mass Communications, Marketing, Business Administration (advertising) or any related field of study.

Certification(s) Required : N / A

License(s) Required : Valid Driver's License

Years Relevant Work Experience : 2 years of relevant experiences

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of currently accepted concepts and practices of membership, events management, public relations & marketing
  • Knowledge of the communities served by the Baton Rouge Zoo
  • Knowledge of local working media representation
  • Excellent administrative & organizational skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills necessary.
  • Knowledge of all membership (annual pass) levels
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills and ability to communicate both orally & in writing
  • Good math skills and ability to perform basic accounting / budgeting functions
  • Skilled in the use of computer & software applications
  • Ability to develop & maintain effective working relations with departmental staff and to relate well to representatives of public & private interest groups, the news media, the public and officials of other agencies.
  • Ability to supervise Membership sales team, data entry associate under direction of Director of Marketing and Public Relations

Functions and Duties

Essential Functions :

  • Responsible for new and renewed membership procurement and processing, including, but not limited to, assembling and mailing membership packets; reconciling applications with deposits, and making bank deposits
  • Responsible for the input and maintenance of the membership database to ensure data security and integrity
  • Familiar with membership database in order to complete monthly duties such as pulling membership renewals and sending thank you letters.
  • Oversee direct mail campaign
  • Develop and implement end-of-year gift appeal to members
  • Train and supervise part-time membership sales staff
  • Manage scheduling for all part-time FOZ staff
  • Works to resolve all membership inquiries with members and potential members
  • Works with Director of Marketing and Public Relations and other departments to write newsletter, e-newsletter and all other membership materials, and maintain member's section of the Zoo's website
  • Responsible for completing errands such as bringing deposits to the bank, purchasing office supplies, completing adopt and animal packets, or specific event errands.
  • Responsible for coordinating and overseeing Zoo events with staff, sponsors and vendors so events run smoothly ensuring maximum guest and sponsor satisfaction
  • Responsible for effectively planning and leading event meetings with administrative staff
  • Strategically establish events calendar to maximize exposure and minimize competition with other attractions / venues
  • Coordinate the production of materials for events including posters, banners, website postings and sponsor signage
  • Prepare and distribute event information to all Zoo staff including maintenance requests, rental and vendor information / needs
  • Conduct evaluations during and after events to determine guest satisfaction, fiscal success, and to build and maintain an event history
  • Conduct research and develop ideas for new membership benefits and events
  • Oversee the Zoo's Cameo accounts and coordinate with education staff to ensure all requests are fulfilled
  • Create and maintain Zoo's social media presence, including daily maintenance of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Secondary Job Duties :

    Supplemental Information

    Full time position, a minimum of 40 hours per week; evening and weekend hours as required to accommodate evening meetings and special weekend events. Must be available in case of emergency; 24 hours a day seven days a week.

    2025 FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

    HEALTH INSURANCE : Comprehensive medical benefits including HMO, PPO, and Blue Saver (Qualified High Deductible High Health Plan) and options are provided through Louisiana Blue. Coverage is effective the first of the month, following two months of employment, a (2 month waiting period). Employee cost per month for HMO : $175.43 - employee only; $597.45 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children; $962.52 - family. Employee cost per month for PPO : $375.23 - employee only; $975.50 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children; $1,492.70 - family. Employee cost per month for Blue Saver : $39.08 - employee only; $162.68 - employee & spouse or employee & dependent children; $290.49 - family.

    LIFE INSURANCE : All full-time employees are insured under a Group Term-Life Insurance policy through Equitable Life Insurance Company a subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. Coverage is subject to decrease at age 65 and 70. There is no cost to the employee except for salaries more than $50,000 which are subject to the imputed income clause under the IRS regulations. Coverage is effective immediately.

    RETIREMENT SYSTEM : BREC contributions to the City-Parish Employees' Retirement System for each employee amount to 37.41% of salary. Employees contribute at the rate of 9.5%. Retirement contributions are tax deferred. Personal contributions are kept on account and refunded if employees leave BREC before their retirement. Additional benefit opportunities are available after 25 years through the DROP program. BREC also offers a Supplemental Retirement DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN through payroll deduction.

    HOLIDAYS : BREC employees receive twelve (12) paid holidays per year.

    SICK LEAVE : BREC employees accumulate sick leave at the rate of 100 hours per year the first five years they are employed; accrual of hours will increase based on the number of years of service, thereafter, up to 192 hours for 15 or more years. Employee is eligible to utilize leave after 30 days of continuous employment.

    ANNUAL LEAVE : BREC employees earn annual leave at the rate of 100 hours per year the first five years they are employed; accrual of hours will increased based on the number of years of service, thereafter, up to 192 hours for 15 or more years. Employee is eligible to utilize leave after 90 days of continuous employment.

    FULL-TIME STATUS : Upon completion of a six-month probationary periods and approval of supervisor, full-time status will be achieved.

    CREDIT UNION : BREC employees are eligible to join the City Federal Credit Union and / or Pelican State Credit Union and enlist in payroll deduction plan. Direct deposit to the Credit Union is also available.

    FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS : BREC is a qualifying employer for public service loan forgiveness. Employees who have Federal Direct Loans and have made 120 payments on the Federal Direct Loans (after October 1, 2007) may be eligible for the remaining loan balance to be forgiven.

    LA START : This 529 Qualified Tuition savings plan may be open on behalf of a named Beneficiary by anyone, including legal entities, provided that the Account Owner or the Beneficiary is a resident of Louisiana. Account Owners may save at their own pace, in amounts they can afford.

    FSA : BREC offers an FSA that allows employees to contribute a portion of their regular earnings before taxes. Distributions from the account must be used to reimburse the employee for qualified expenses related to medical and dental services.

    SUPPLEMENT BENEFITS : BREC offers voluntary benefits through AFLAC or Colonial Life. Those benefits include accident insurance, critical care, life, LTD and STD.

    BREC reserves the right to at any time and from time to time to modify or amend, in whole or in part, any or all of the provisions of the benefit package.
