What are the responsibilities and job description for the Afterschool Counselor position at BREC Recreation And Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge?
The Counselor works at BREC recreation sites, assisting in organization and operation of daily program activities-supervising sports, recreational activities on and off site, supervising and actively participating with a group of youth assisting with related inventories and paperwork adhering to operating and safety rules and regulations.
Area of Study (major) Required:
Recreation, Physical Education, Therapeutic Recreation, Elementary Education or related discipline desired.
Years Relevant Work Experience:
1 year experience working with youth.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to supervise and actively participate with 10 - 15 active children in recreational setting for up to three hours a day.
- Ability to work with youth, staff, parents, and general public;
- Leadership skills, including the ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm to associates, participants, and parents;
- Ability to make mature decisions affecting the safety and well-being of children;
- Skilled in varied sports/recreation activities such as bowling, skating, field games, etc. and arts & crafts
- Ability to adapt activities for children with disabilities so that inclusion (interaction with children with and without disabilities can participate together) can occur;
- NOTE: Specialty programs require related educational/skill background such as:
- Zoo/Biology/Zoology/Wildlife Management/Pre-Vet
- Horse Activity Center - considerable horseback riding experience

- Assisting with organization, promotion, leading and teaching of one or more activity classes of the program, including: nature study, arts and crafts, sports, games, music, special features, or events.
- Physically participating in all activities with youth.
- Acting as an advisor, counselor, manager of group of participants.
- Communicating, enforcing, and adhering to rules and regulations for operation, safety and welfare of participants.
- Reporting to the supervisor on activities, participants, plans, programs, problems and needs: recommending action, carrying our policies and objectives of programs.
- Oversees special events by securing volunteers, assigning staff, and coordinating set-up/take-down.
- Gives presentations on and off site at various venues and large public outreach events.
- Oversees grounds, trail, and meadow maintenance activities.
- Directs staff in animal care & handling, and maintenance of live animal exhibits.
- Pursues collaborations with other BREC facilities/departments as well as other local wildlife/education agencies.
- Produces monthly reports summarizing visitation, revenue and program participation.
Part-time position as scheduled for the entire school year, within general framework of 3 hours per day, 5 days per week, meal break as scheduled with participants.
