What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Control Officer position at Breckinridge County Animal Shelter?
Position includes some limited evening, weekend, and holiday work.
Shifts range 7:30am to 4:30/5pm CST
Position requirements:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
- Must live in Breckinridge County or within close proximity to Hardinsburg KY to be able to respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes
- Background check, valid driver’s license and be at least 21 yrs. Old
- Must be able to routinely lift 25lbs to 75lbs.
- Able to be on call 4 to 5 days a week, work some weekends
- Must have computer skills and excellent people skills
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Responsible for enforcing County laws regarding stray, dangerous, nuisance and unwanted domestic animals; investigates complaints; patrols assigned areas; captures animals; performs other duties related to humane animal protection and control
- Individual selected will also perform some kennel work, complete general office duties, assist with adoptions, return animals to owners, assist in cleaning and maintaining shelter and grounds, assist in euthanasia when necessary, and maintain all related records and paperwork.
-The ACO will respond to calls after normal working hours only if the situation is deemed an emergency by Animal Shelter Director.
- Obtain euthanasia license within 8 months old of employment
-Investigate cruelty, abuse, and/or neglect complaints concerning domestic animals with assistance from the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Department when needed
-Pick up stray dogs in Breckinridge County KY ONLY
-Enforce all applicable state and local laws concerning animal laws.
- Other duties as directed by the County Judge Executive and Animal Shelter Director
- Stay current on national and state laws and continuing education opportunities for animal control
-Maintain assigned vehicle with vehicle maintenance. Vehicle shall be kept clean and presentable at all times.
-Learn proper animal handling techniques (have compassion for sick and scared animals
-Ensure all animals housed at the Breckinridge County Animal Shelter are treated humanely. All animals at the shelter are kept safe, clean, and are fed daily and always have access to clean drinking water
-Abuse or neglect by staff member (employee or volunteer) of animals housed at shelter will NOT be tolerated and grounds for immediate dismissal.
- Determine, on an as-needed basis and as part of staff/committee when an animal is unadoptable, and euthanasia is required
-Coordinate with county attorney office on all cases and violations
-Schedule and conduct all kennel license inspections and maintain all follow up checkups.
-Maintain all records for cases and kennel licenses
-Assist with fundraising

Pay: $14.00 - $17.00 per hour
