JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist
SUPERVISOR: Principal
EXEMPT STATUS: Exempt
WORK YEAR: Up to 200 Days
BASIC FUNCTION: To provide all students with an enriched library/media environment containing a wide variety and range of materials and equipment that invites intellectual growth, and aids all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center resources.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Develops short and long-range goals which guide the development of the Library Media Curriculum
- Develops and implements policies and procedures for the operation of the Library Media Curriculum
- Maintains a technologically advanced facility and program
- Coordinates the school's implementation of KETS
- Trains and supervises clerks, student assistants, and adult volunteers to perform duties efficiently
- Selects materials and technology which support the school's curriculum and educational philosophy
- Withdraws obsolete materials
- Classifies, catalogs, processes, and organizes for circulation the educational media and technology
- Establishes and follows procedures for maintenance and repair of all media.
- Maintains a current inventory of holdings
- Prepares and submits reports to administrators as needed to promote short and long-term goals
- Prepares and administers budgets according to the needs of the Library Media Curriculum
- Evaluates Library Media Curriculum programs, services, facilities and materials to ensure optimum use
- Maintains the library to be functional, attractive, and orderly
- Manages student behavior in a constructive manner
- Serves as an instructional resource consultant and media specialist to teachers and students
- Establishes methods for flexible scheduling of classes and students to promote use by individuals, small groups, and whole classes
- Serves on committees involved with designing learning activities for students, curriculum revision, and/or textbook adoption
- Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or other administrator

- Record-keeping techniques
- Operation of a computer terminal and data entry techniques
- Oral and written communication skills
- Laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned activities
- Policies and objectives of assigned program and activities
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
ABILITIES:

- Provide access to professional materials and information for school staff
- Adhere to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations
- Submit accurate reports promptly
- Utilize current research and methods in areas of technology, teaching, learning, and library and information science
- Participate in appropriate /relevant professional development
- Demonstrate sound judgment in the decision making process
- Demonstrate care and good taste in personal appearance
- Plan cooperatively with teachers to incorporate research, information retrieval skills, and literature appreciation
- Plan units with teachers which stress whole language and interdisciplinary strategies
- Promote a positive relationship with students, staff, and community
- Publicize the LMC programs, services and materials through newsletters, announcements, and in other innovative ways
- Networks with other libraries and shares resources
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work is primarily sedentary. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. The work at times requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights. The work requires activities involving driving automotive equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Experience and preparation required by the Board
- Demonstrates knowledge of current Library Media Curriculum and instructional trends and techniques
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Kentucky certification appropriate to the grade level and curricular assignment
- Library Media Specialist Certification
- Has met the requirements for criminal records check and child abuse and neglect check as specified by Kentucky State Law
