PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS: Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed. Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies. A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check. MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one’s personal vehicle). Employees who travel must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver’s license, and good driving record. All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening. Position Summary:
The Department of Communication at Brenau University – a vibrant and growing program located at the heart of downtown Gainesville, GA – is looking for a new colleague to join their ranks. This program offers knowledge and training across media platforms, fosters skills in written and oral communication, and boosts students’ media literacy. We offer a wide range of classes that provide a well-rounded review of mass communication, PR, journalism, marketing, communication skills, and writing, and students can focus on a concentration or direction that appeals to them most. Students immediately receive hands-on experience with media equipment and participate in real-world communication projects to prepare them for effective and ethical careers in communication. Upon graduating, students in the College of Business and Communication will have successfully completed internships and professional projects for their portfolio and resume. Professional development and readiness for the workforce are hallmarks of our program with a strong post-graduation employment rate.
The department offers bachelor’s degree programs in Mass Communication (on-ground) and Communication and Media Studies (online), and an online master’s degree program in Communication and Media Studies.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An earned Masters or Doctoral degree with 18 graduate hours in Communication or related field.
- A minimum of one year of teaching experience (2 or more years preferred). This could include teaching while completing a graduate degree.
- Excellent academic credentials in teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Broad knowledge of communication field with expertise in Journalism and Public Relations; experience preferred in teaching media courses such as public speaking and mass communication.
- The program strongly encourages inclusive and equitable pedagogy and research.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate excellence in teaching both traditional-aged and non-traditional adult students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Online instruction experience is also desirable.
- Advise and mentor students, assess student learning outcomes, and engage in other service activities within the department, college, university, community, and profession.
- Assist in creating and participating in initiatives and programs to boost enrollment and retention.
- Collaborate with faculty to develop, support, and implement the university and department mission statements, assessment, student advising, and outcome statements.
- Conduct research in Communication or related disciplines leading to publication in academic and professional journals and/or conference presentations.
- Teaching load is four classes per semester/eight classes per year with a minimum of 30 hours on campus/week.
- Work well with others, good communication skills, dependability, and collegiality are essential within the department and the university.
Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Nine-month, yearly renewable contract. Applications are due April 11, 2025. The start date for this position is August 2025.

Mostly Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment related to teaching. Prolonged periods sitting and standing. worker is required to have close visual acuity to grade papers, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Must have the ability to travel short distances, and/or drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials. Exerting up to 15 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Some repetitive motion.
