The Farm Underwriter I is responsible for growing / maintaining a profitable assigned Farm book of business. A Farm Underwriter I collects and reviews information, makes decisions, and communicates with agency contacts and business partners within assigned level of authority. Referral reviews and additional direction are provided by the Underwriting Supervisor.
Essential Duties :
Review applications, change requests, claims alerts, and correspondence
Request and review inspections, reports, and other relevant information to evaluate risks and / or exposures
Apply underwriting guidelines and criteria to approve / price or decline risks within assigned limits of authority
Apply terms, conditions, and / or exclusions as needed
Refer over-authority requests and exceptions to Underwriting Supervisor
Via various communication methods, communicate with agents regarding Farm underwriting :
New business, renewals, and endorsements
Inspections and risk improvement actions
Quoting, rating, rules, and coverages
Cancellations, non-renewals, and other underwriting actions
Prioritize workload by considering effective dates, time standards, and legal / compliance requirements
Document risk analysis considerations and activity within underwriting file
Assist Marketing Managers with agency training, communication, meetings / visits, and action plan implementation as needed to support agency profitability
Provide feedback to Underwriting Management regarding Farm products and processes
Perform other duties as assigned or directed
Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree and / or minimum of two (2) years' equivalent business experience preferred.
AFIS Designation or successful completion of AFIS designation within first year in the role.
Strong analytical skills and problem-solving focus.
Inquisitive approach and willingness to learn.
Ability to balance attention to detail with a sense of urgency to complete quality work in a timely manner.
Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team with limited supervision.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others in a professional setting.
Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, communicate sound decisions, and explain rationale.
Professional interpersonal and written / verbal communication skills.
Proficient typing and ability to use office-related technology.
