What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Programs Specialist position at Brevard County Sheriff's Office?
This position performs a variety of duties in support of community services programs and special events for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Under general supervision, works within the goals and direction of the Community Services unit Supervisor.The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional related tasks as necessary.
Work is primarily performed during normal business hours Monday - Friday (8am – 5pm) however, schedule flexibility is required to effectively perform the requirements of the position. May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, including extended periods of time on an as needed basis.
In the event of a hurricane, major storm, natural or manmade disaster that may threaten the area the employee is expected to work.
May have limited contact with inmates.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph, pre-employment medical physical, reference/employment/neighborhood checks. submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to assuming position and will be subject to return to duty, post-accident and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed with BCSO.

- Facilitates all Brevard County Sheriff's Office Community Services Programs, to include: B.A.M. program, Citizen Academy, Neighborhood Watch, Security Surveys, Shred Events, and Teen Driver Challenge.
- Assists with presentations on topics such as: Anti-Bullying, Drug Awareness, Frauds, Internet Safety, and Personal Safety.
- Provides logistical support for BCSO special events such as, Light fest, Dancing with the Space Coast, shop with a Cop, and Sandbag distribution.
- Cultivates contacts, establishes and maintains a positive, effective and collaborative working relationship with BCSO personnel, other law enforcement agencies, court systems, social service providers community leaders, hospitals, public health providers, and any other local regional state, and federal agencies in effort to provide support services.
- Stays abreast of new trends, techniques and technology through meetings, seminars, training, sessions, and conferences as required to maintain crime prevention proficiency.
- Maintains knowledge of city/county ordinances, ongoing legislation, and law changes related to items explicit to citizen resources.
- Promotes programs and BCSO special events using various publications, flyers, newsletters, advertisements, social media productions and community events.
- Prepares and distributes crime bulletins to neighborhood and business members.
- Answers phone calls and emails and forwards messages or refers citizens to the appropriate contact.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular, dependable, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Program facilitation, and public speaking experience preferred.
- Must be proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Requires a Florida Driver's License, (must maintain for duration of employment).
- Past experience in a law enforcement or governmental agency preferred.
