What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jail Facility Maintenance Worker position at Brevard County Sheriff's Office?
Performs routine maintenance and tasks necessary to keep the facilities and grounds clean, orderly and in good working condition. This class works with minimum supervision and is required to exercise judgment and initiative in scheduling and planning job duties.
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work performed in the job class, as necessary.
Work is primarily completed during normal business hours (Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm); however, schedule flexibility is required to effectively perform the requirements of the position. May be required to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
In the event of an emergency, natural or manmade disaster the employee will be expected to work.
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation including polygraph. Requires drug test prior to assuming position and if employed, will be subject to post-accident, and/or random and reasonable suspicion drug tests while employed.

- Minor plumbing repair, replacement, and new work to include fixtures, fittings, lines, etc.
- Minor carpentry repair, such as cutting replacement wood.
- Lighting repair and replacement.
- Minor masonry repair, replacement, and new work to include sidewalks, driveways, drainage structures, etc.
- All levels of painting applications, preparation of surfaces, scaffolding, etc.
- Minor preventive maintenance to include fencing, air conditioning filters and associated facility equipment.
- Performs a variety of work in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, including painting tasks, pressure spraying.
- Handle recycling materials.
- Maintains grounds around facilities and security structures.
- Obtains estimates for supplies and repair parts.
- Performs other maintenance, grounds keeping and custodial tasks, as assigned.
- Maintains records of scheduled maintenance procedures.
- Transports inmates to, from and within the Jail Complex.
- Receives work assignments; prepares crew assignment sheets and assigns work.
- Supervises and controls inmate workers; monitors for difficulties and intervenes if necessary.
- Maintains security at all times; assures inmates are following rules and procedures; assures all inmates are accounted for and contained in appropriate areas.
- May operate equipment such as tractors, mowers & ATVs; performs minor maintenance, such as cleaning or fueling.
- May inspect equipment and make minor repairs or corrective recommendations.
- Sets up safe work zones and ensures safety precautions on and around the work sites.
- Provides regular progress reports to the Facilities Director.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one (1) year custodial, building maintenance experience.
- Valid Florida Class E Driver's License (Must maintain for the duration of employment.)
