POSITION OVERVIEW
Located along the Space Coast in Melbourne, Florida, the Brevard Zoo is an AZA-accredited facility with a diverse collection of over 900 animals representing nearly 200 species. It is also home to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for rehabilitation of wild marine turtles. Brevard Zoo is well-known for its strong conservation ethic and unique attractions, such as kayaking through the Africa area, giraffe feeding, and rhinoceros and various other animal encounters.
The Manager, Youth & Family Learning is responsible for the day-to-day management of camps and classes, including evening, Scout, and adult programs. As a member of the Department’s management team, the Manager helps to design and expand programs that drive revenue and to further serve the Zoo’s mission and learning goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
REQUIRED:
· College degree in education, science, or related field.
· Minimum three years of experience in an informal education setting.
PREFERRED/DESIRED:
· Experience with and knowledge of curriculum design and environmental education best practices.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee all aspects of camps including curriculum design, staff training, scheduling, evaluation, and day-to-day operation.
- Develop and oversee new and existing revenue producing classes, including adult, evening, and scout programs.
- Ensure that all camps and classes are delivered in alignment with the Zoo’s Learning & Engagement Plan.
- Mentor, train, and evaluate staff to ensure program quality.
- Develop, track, monitor, and manage program budgets for assigned programs.
- Actively monitor program enrollment and participation.
- Collaborate with the early childhood learning team on K-2 programming, including kindergarten camps.
- Tactfully and effectively manage requests, suggestions, and complaints from Zoo staff, volunteers, guests, and the general public.
- As a member of the Conservation Learning team, be able and willing to facilitate programs as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent teaching and curriculum design skills.
- Ability to lead and design environmental and/or science education programs.
- Capability to deliver programs to large and diverse audiences in multiple settings.
- Proficiency and experience in the full suite of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to compose letters and reports that are detailed, accurate, complete and error free
- Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to effectively prioritize work and complete tasks in a timely and accurate manner.
- Experience mentoring and supervising others.
- Interpersonal skills, including ability to work with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to properly handle a variety of animals.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(L) Light work
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects. If the use of arm/leg controls require exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as light work.
POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:
Indoor office environment most often with frequent movement outdoors. Exposure to extreme heat and weather conditions. Requires Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Kneeling, Finger Dexterity, Talking, Hearing, and Visual Acuity frequently.
WORK SCHEDULE:
May be required to work weekends and nights as necessary.
TRAVEL:
Position may require the use of a Zoo vehicle to support offsite programs.
