We are seeking a Property Tax Senior Associate to join our multi-billion dollar client. This role will be instrumental in managing property tax compliance, planning, and negotiations. You will work closely with internal teams and external parties to ensure optimal property tax management for our diverse and growing renewable energy projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the negotiation of property tax abatements and other related agreements with local jurisdictions and external assessors.
- Prepare, file, and manage property tax renditions, returns, and other related documentation for a wide range of assets across multiple states.
- Lead negotiations related to property tax valuations, ensuring tax liabilities are minimized for operational assets.
- Evaluate and appeal property tax assessments as needed, managing approximately 10% of assets that are involved in formal appeal processes.
- Supervise property tax audits and related litigation, collaborating with legal teams as required.
- Draft and review memoranda regarding the property tax implications of specific transactions, ensuring compliance with tax laws and company policies.
- Prepare detailed property tax schedules to support accounting, finance, and treasury functions, including budget forecasts, accruals, and cash projections.
- Collaborate with project teams and modelers to provide property tax inputs for development projects.
- Support other tax department functions as needed, including research and project review.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in property tax compliance and planning, ideally within a large corporation or consulting firm.
- Certification in Property Tax (CMI) or CPA preferred.
- Experience with renewable energy projects or within the energy sector is a plus.
- Proven ability to negotiate and secure property tax reductions through both formal and informal appeal processes.
- Strong understanding of various asset valuation methodologies including Fair Market Value (FMV), Cost, and Income approaches.
- Knowledge of state and local property tax laws, including reduction and incentive programs.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (complex functions and formulas) is essential.
- SAP experience is an asset.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to think analytically and creatively to address complex tax issues.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset to build strong relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
