NOTE: This position is local to Dallas/Fort Worth only. No applicants outside of DFW will be considered.
Job Summary: The directional drill operator is responsible for operating various directional drilling and other equipment required for underground construction.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Operate drill equipment and various other equipment in conjunction with drilling duties. i.e. directional drill, hydrovac, excavator, etc.
- Responsible for reading paint or locating utility placement flags, and possessing the ability to "read the job layout," including valves and meter housings that may or may not have been located
- Ensure that the Company's assets (vehicles, equipment, tools, etc.) are properly and continuously maintained in good condition and secured in a safe manner
- Read material organization drawings and other resources as needed to complete excavation requirements, which may include basic hand tools
- Maintain drill logs
- Maintain effective working relationships with people contacted in the course of work
- All other duties assigned
Technical Skills:
- Ability to identify and use the tools needed to maintain and service the drill, drill stem, and rack, as well as the ability to diagnose and/or relay any problems to a certified repair technician
- Ability to read and interpret construction and engineering plans
- Ability to research land and platform information and communicate design impressions
- Ability to accurately sketch and record field notes and calculations for as-builts
- Ability to perform and/or instruct entry-level skills and practices as needed

- Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment

Education:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. plus 5-10 years of experience operating a steering drill; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience as a directional drill locator
- Ability to drill holes in both standard and high-risk areas, such as areas with live utilities
- Ability to listen and implement instructions
- Knowledge of road traffic control rules
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all equipment
- Knowledge of underground construction practices
- Knowledge of health and safety standards, practices and procedures
- Knowledge of reading and interpreting AT&T and/or CATV design printouts
Physical requirements:
- A valid Class A driver's license or the ability to acquire within 90 days is required
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
- Individuals must have a valid driver's license and driving record that meets the conditions of the company's policy
- Must be in good physical condition with the ability to bend, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat, and lift 80 lbs.; includes body weight, equipment, tools, and boxes
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
- The position requires working outdoors in all types of weather and in the vicinity of vehicular traffic
- It may be necessary to work long and unpredictable hours
